Agreed - especially given it's not even formally launched yet. My past experience of early access has been... underwhelming. ;) Totally amazed by how they pulled it all together for this one.
AO, EQ, and WOW were launched in a whole different world of MMOGs - the pioneers were bound to have far more issues at launch. But if you compare ESO to a more recent MMOGs like FFXIV, ESO has been pretty smooth. I'll reserve judgement until April 4 though, when they really open the flood gates. I imagine its a lot easier for ZO to load balance when everyone is on the same server.
World and standards may be different. My views on playable are probably different. I know what bad is and this is not it by my standards :)
Rift and GW2 both has pretty smooth launches, as I recall. I had some friends who had trouble in Rift, but I hardly had any. Still, ESO may be the smoothest so far.
Agree, Rift and Gw2 were smooth. This feels way more polished to me though.
Can't forget DAoC, it's still classified as being one of if not the smoothest launches of an MMO. Also it's in the pre-WoW era. Given the fact that some of the main people are from DAoC and UO I'm not surprised they launched as well as they did.
Very true I did not mention it because it was playable. The three in the title were not lol :)
Well ok they were sort of playable. Mixed with hours of beating head into keyboard lol.
All of those games were released so long ago that it is hard to really compare them. They were pioneers on the MMO front. That said, I haven't had stability problems so far but I have had ALOT of quest bugging which I find very frustrating.
Also, is anyone else finding that there are some really rude/mean people already playing? I had someone train this giant creature onto me while I was trying to open a chest so that they could get it. They watched me die and then looted it. I was really surprised.
Yes since you can actually train in this game. Expect it at all times.
I just run, also if I accidentally train some one I try to help them.
I have to agree - pretty smooth for me so far. Some glitches, yes - a little maintenance today - but I remember WOW being brought down every day for 2 - 4 hours to reset the servers and get of issues ... and the queues they instituted since their servers couldn't handle the stress.
SWG when it first launched was similar to this launch - but ESO has such great graphics - so very detailed - as well as all the voice overs I would have to give the edge to ESO since there is so much more on its plate.
It's not that smooth for me. I've had quite a few random disconnects, as well as quests that can't be completed because they have bugged out (quests that were bugged prior to January). That being said it's better than some launches I have seen. Not as good as Rift or GW2, but much better than Warhammer or any of the WoW launches.
Gotta say this is the smoothest release i have ever seen, even with the flaws i have experienced.
I was around for LOTRO and DCUO launches, lotro had a full open beta before launch that went to lvl 15 and once the game was officially open you could keep your character, its in that respect I am a little biased lol. But what I am worried about is the status of the servers once ESO does launch, shards will help with bottle necking but even now I have seen some issues with quest npcs not respawning properly, I just hope its an issue they can catch now before it becomes real issue.
Even though AO was probably worse, the hardest launch for me to suffer through was probably SWG - my anticipation for that game was so fierce at that point it made the terribad launch even harder to stomach.
I'm just hoping their beta stress-test gave them an idea of how to handle the login/account server issues once the actual launch hits.
Hmmm guess it finally hit a big bump....server has been down for "maintenance" for over 9 hours with no ETA on when it'll be complete.
Yeah, they're fixing inventory issues and bringing the mail system back up.
Oh man AO was the worst launch ever.
Rift was the best launch I can remember.
Sure ESO has been fairly smooth. Though the problems with quest phasing where evident months ago and seem to be compounding with more players. If Zenimax had done a proper lengthy open beta (even just with pre-orders) I would be less perturbed. Hopefully they just need to throw more hardware at the problem and we can cruise forward.
Enjoying the game. Loving the guild. You people are awesome in so many ways. Thanks for having me.
Defiance. first week of launch it was down more often than it was up(at least on Xbox). This launch has been smooth compared to most I've seen, there will always be bugs and whatnot, but compared to WoW, EQ, AO, SB(still one of my favorites despite horrific flaws) or Defiance it was the best of that lot.
The Secret World was probably the smoothest launch I've experienced, followed by RIFT. The more I play ESO, the more bugs, glitches, and progression-blocking broken quest steps I find. While there hasn't been a lot of downtime or stuck-at-login issues, the game itself has a lot of glaring issues that should probably have been handled during the year-long beta test.
Now if you want to talk about bad launches, nothing comes anywhere close to the six-months early launch of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. That launch was so bad it not only killed any chance the game had of being a mainstream success, it literally killed the company that made it!
The last MMO that I played from scratch is FFXIV. And I couldn't even log in. It was that bad. Days and days trying to log in and not getting in.
Compared with that, ESO has been great. If the quests are a bit bugged, I go and explore. I am not lacking for something to do.
I echo the Rift release as it was pretty smooth but with the open beta it made the launch smoother.
My worst launch was a game called World War II Online. The servers kept crashing and when they would come back up you would have to patch the game and then login only to find that your progress had been reset.
That game was pure PVP and they had, and still have problems that allow people to cheat. So suprised it has lasted 10 years.
I've ran into a few quest here that have bugs. What I've been focusing on mostly though is just gathering and crafting. I figure they will get things patched so in the meantime I'm trying to level my crafting proffessions.
