It seems that in the end, Sauron won. Before the game could even show its first trailer backroom business decisions killed this hot upcoming MMORPG. You may have remembered back in the fall of last year when Tencent bought Athlon Games parent studio Leyou Technologies, owner of Warframe developer Digital Extremes. Well following that buyout, negotiations between Amazon and Tencent fell through and Amazon decided to scrap the project.
I can't help but wonder if this was a power play by Tencent who is the owner of Riot Games, who just happens to be scheduled to release their new similar MMO centered around the lore behind League of Legends around the same time. Killing the competition that they would only have a partial stake in would certainly be to their advantage.
So that means the one bright shining star on the horizon has faded. That leaves Ashes of Creation and Elyon as our final two currently known MMORPGs that could have the ability to house a potential chapter. With so many games focusing on small communities it's becoming increasingly more difficult to find a suitable large-scale home.
We will keep our eyes peeled and hope that the LOTR IP will find its way back to the MMO scene. What we do know is Amazon has 1 game standing. New World. It's the last of the games Amazon Game Studios was producing that hasn't been canceled. They do have a publishing deal for Lost Ark but they won't be developing that title. So we will see how well they can save their division with one final title needing to carry the mantle.
