Over the past month, ArenaNet announced that it plans to move away from the free living world story expansions, to a more accelerated content plan to bring expansions on a much more frequent basis with small content packs included in each expansion. These new expansions will be for a reduced price and include content drops throughout the year.
From what I'm seeing it is moving to a system similar to Elder Scrolls Online where there is an annual expansion and several big content drops tied to that expansion.
While this is good in the fact we could be seeing more content being dropped more regularly, it's also bad in the fact that while we used to get content for free regularly we will now be required to pay for the new content if we want to play it. This pay gate can be crippling for some people who do not have the funds to continuously shell out. I'm not entirely sold that this is a good move for the game and will have to wait and see how it actually plays out.
