Just like Darth Helmet I went ahead and pushed the red button. To a similar effect, I was scrambling to get everything working again. The Good news is we're mostly back up and running. We've made a significant hardware and backend software upgrade.
Originally I planned to make this upgrade over several months, but a security exploit was announced for a piece of server software we used that had no fix. I immediately made the call to take all of the sites on our server rack offline until they could be upgraded. I did a bit of research, built a conversation plan, and began running some global replacements to make our site compatible with the new software.
Sadly it wasn't only the Gaiscioch site that needed these upgrades. It was also Conqueror's Blade Hub, Sanctum of Rall, Gaiscioch Magazine, our community event sites, and a bunch of my professional sites. All in all, there were 14 sites I had to convert overnight. After 34 straight hours of coding and testing, I managed to get the core systems back online with some of the fringe areas still producing errors.
The result however you can certainly feel. It's now running at warp speed compared to the clunky speed we were used to. Now I'm just going through patching bugs where I find them and optimizing some queries and tables in the database. I hope to be back on track to finish up the trading post soon as I was very close to being done before the world came crashing down on my head.
While this wasn't a very fun time for me, and quite frankly it was terrifying diving head first into several new pieces of software I knew nothing about. I did remind myself that I am capable of a lot more than I give myself credit for and that's a good thing for me not to lose sight of.
