ArcheAge Previews: Finally Playable in English, Friends and Family Alpha Begins

By William Murphy on January 14, 2014

The Holiday season marked a significant milestone for ArcheAge at Trion Worlds: the Friends and Family Alpha, up 24x7 minus any patches and maintenance is in full swing. That’s right folks: English Language ArcheAge is running, roughly translated, being played and devoured by Trion and its employees’ friends and family.  If you know someone at the company... now’s the time to bug them for an invite. We caught up with CEO Scott Hartsman to talk about the milestone and all the other things Trion’s been working on with ArcheAge... as well as when we could possibly see alpha and beta expand to other testers.

Scott began by telling me that he gets about one week of truly guilt-free game marathon time a year. “No joke?” he said, “I spent about 75% of my vacation time just playing ArcheAge. Not kidding, honestly.”  And it’s like that across the company. They all knew what sort of game AA was when they decided to publish it in the West. They knew it was a huge, sprawling sandbox with an incredible amount of things to do. But what they didn’t realize was just how much that point would be driven home once translation was in place. The UI is now about 80% readable, and much of the quest text has been given at least a first pass at translation (with just a few here or there still in Korean). As with any translation, the first pass is a sort of a “raw, make it English” pass, and now the focus is on refining it all and making it ring true.

I asked about what that sort of translation progress means for beta and launch, given how it’s one of the biggest pieces of bringing the game to the US. Scott said they’re trying to figure that out right now, so it’s not set in stone. But he did divulge the process they’re going with, which is: get in-game ourselves, and then make an assessment on what parts need to be working before they can take the game to a larger alpha.  They put all these items on a spreadsheet that lists the must-haves and so forth. An example would be the world map translation: right now it’s all Korean still. Then the beta has it’s own set of blockers that must be taken care of before it opens up. An example here would be to get the In-Game Store working.

To that end Scott mentioned our own Victor Barreiro’s recent ArcheAge column which talks about recent changes to the Korean and Russian monetization models. In essence, Victor noticed how similar the stores were to Rift’s model here in the US. Scott said this was no coincidence. The XLGAMES team in Korea, the Mail.RU team in Russia, and Trion talk every week about ArcheAge. The teams in both foreign markets loved the way Rift’s store is set up and how it performed, and ergo? All three are going to try and model ArcheAge’s store after the one you find in Telara. Now obviously, things like purchasable “catch-up” gear for raids and dungeons won’t be a thing that’s needed or wanted in ArcheAge, as so much of the game depends on crafting. So the big hurdle with the store is figuring out just what will work and what won’t. But you can bet there will be convenience items, cosmetic stuff, mounts, and so forth.

We then got on to talking about Scott’s recent week-long binge on ArcheAge and he offered up his views, though he knows many will say he’s biased, as to why ArcheAge is going to be such an important entry to the genre. That said, here are Scott Hartsman’s three big reasons to look forward to ArcheAge:

1.) Player choice, Player agency AA let’s you ask: “What do I want to do today?” Instead of telling you “Here’s what you do today, quest down this line.” The gam’es very much a sandbox, and all about what you feel like doing, working with or without others.  You can be a hermit on an island all your own, or a merchant prince, a pirate, a treasure hunter, a killer, an explorer... or all of the above.  He’s found that the more you dig in, the more you want to learn, and more you want to do and take part in.

2.) The Massive Scope - Scott’s in awe of the sheer number of things you can DO in this game. There’s no MMO that exists or will exist in 2014 that can beat AA in number of things you can do.  You can hang glide, spelunk, scuba, pilot ships, siege castles, farm cattle, plant trees and flowers all over the world, become a merchant, a mercenary, a thief, a pirate, a builder.

3.) The Looks - Scott’s own words about ArcheAge’s visuals: “it’s absolutely gorgeous and ridiculously detailed.” Once you do something as simple as walking up to a quest camp, realize you can turn on lights... or first piloting your boat and see the water, the sails.  Or when you see a fire on your ground, and that you can take logs from the stack of wood. ArcheAge is gorgeously rendered but also very interactive. Lots of content pushes you to find cool stuff, guiding you to sandbox elements without hand-holding.

Then I asked Scott to sort of clarify the way ArcheAge uses both a traditional quest structure and mixes it with the sandbox to ease people into the freedom it presents. There is a content path, a main story from 1-50, but you’ll only see about half the world while progressing through the story.  You start out in an area with quest hubs, quest progression, in your own racial starting area.  This is intended as a way to introduce you into the world. Within one or two quests, you wander into a mine, and you start picking away at rocks, start leveling up that tradeskill.

Then you start seeing vegetation in the world, notice you can pick it. Then you find you can chop trees down, and realize you’re carrying all of these bits and pieces to aid in tradeskilling. It all opens up as you progress.  There’s a whole other quest overhead for tradeskills, and farming, which leads you quickly into owning your own farm. So you’ll get a safe place to make your own, pull up water from a well, and water your crops.  Or if you want to just plant stuff in the wild, be ArcheAge’s version of Johnny Appleseed (or Joe Sunflower as Scott called it), you can.  Right from level 1, you could ignore the quests and story, and just go off and work on your own. Scott mentioned that Amary (Associate Producer on AA, formerly Rift) went from 33-40 JUST tradeskilling over the break.

As if that wasn’t enough, Scott wanted to make sure to drive home why AA will be unique among the many MMOs set to launch in 2014. You’ll get your own hang glider, customize it, kit it out to make it bigger and faster, but also make it shoot other gliders out of the sky. You’ll raise your own pets and livestock from babies, effectively becoming a master at husbandry if you so desire.  The first time you summon a boat you’ve spend hours working towards will leave you breathless. You’ll see that there are air tanks to go scuba diving with, even two for guests or friends. You’ll find a harpoon gun, portable harpoons for protection underwater.  What other modern MMO lets you build your own plantation, drydock, and craft a boat from scratch?  Lastly Scott brought up treasure hunting. You’ll quickly find just how much importance is tied to crafting once you find a treasure map but realize you need to head underwater to get at the booty. You need a sextant (crafted), a dive-helmet (crafted) and other supplies.  And when the day’s over, and all the adventuring is done, maybe you’ll find a local pub and cozy up with friends while a guild member plays you one of their own arrangements on his or her hand-made instruments.

ArcehAge is shaping up to be the quintessential sandbox, a game many have long been waiting for. The standard MMO trappings like dungeons and quests are there, but it’s what goes beyond those details that will draw you in and capture your imagination. Scott’s a gamer through and through, and his excitement for AA is absolutely palpable. If his fervor for XLGAMES’ magnum opus is to believed, then we have a lot to look forward to this Spring as development progresses on ArcheAge. Be sure to head over to ArcheAgeGame.com (Trion’s official site), sign up for the newsletter, and keep an eye out for beta updates.

Is there considerable interest in ArcheAge in the Gaiscioch community? We have a small group rallying in Pax gaming and I was wondering if we should combine forces like we did for eso since AA is definately a game where there is strength in numbers.

Gaiscioch as a whole will not be going to archeage. We reviewed the product and found the 200 people per guild cap to be too low for us to even think of going there. It was either eso or archeage and eso won.

That said I'm sure several of our members will give it a spin regardless. There just won't be an official Gaiscioch presence.

Would this be saighdear worthy or would Gaiscioch members simply seek out a random guild to join if they are interested?

Hopefully the GSCH family will be there in some form. It seems to be the PREFECT game for our community.

It's not the perfect game for our community. There are still major issues with it that prevent it from even being eligible to be a potential branch. It doesn't meet the minimum requirements. That said, yes there will be many Gaiscioch who play this together in some form or another. Just not Gaiscioch officially. We limit our reach to no more than 2 games at a time. It simply is just too much to maintain any larger than that. We can't keep it close nit with wings spread to wide.

I plan, at this time anyways, to start a guild there for Gaiscioch members. Open to names, but thinking of calling it, Ascalon, the name of the sword that St. George used to slay the dragon. Will need 4 other players to start it with me. I have gotten the flounders pax so I will be in 4 days early. Server unknown at this time, but I will pick one further down the list, since upper servers are generally picked first and heavy. Let me know if you are starting 4 days early so we can coordinate.

So far, I am really enjoying the alpha/beta of ArcheAge, much more then I ever did with ESO. I love the idea of actually buying land and creating your own farm to farm. hehe. Planning on doing trees for lumber for houses. Lets start forming a list of all that are interested and see if we cant get a large GSCH presence in that game. MMO's are a lot more fun with GSCH family along.

I got to agree with that statement, MMO's are more fun with GSCH.  It shouldn't be too hard to get the last four to help you start it up.

I personally love to fly around and find what I shouldn't have found, and then help the local forestry service, by removing the invading plants.

You know Cuth I feel the same after joining GSCH.  MMOs weren't the same after that, it's either GSCH or no go.  It's just astounding how my entire view of things changed just by simply being part of the family.  Ever since then any game that I played without the presence of GSCH made me feel......naked.  You guys became my armor, and my sword and shield.  I guess what I'm trying to say is that the most fun I've ever had in an online game was with all of you. :)  After experiencing AvA in ESO with Fog and the gang I can say without a doubt that I would follow you to Hell and back, and that it would be an honor to do it again in ArcheAge.

GSCH has spoiled me for what to expect from guilds and so far they have ALL been a disappointment, thru all the games I have tried since joining GSCH. We really need to get a guild going of GSCH family. Like I said, I will start one, on the EASTERN faction when we go live. Hopefully enough GSCH are interested to join and help it go. I have squirrelled away some funds to buy us a web site. As it gets closer to Live, I will start a separate thread dedicated to starting an Archeage guild. Be looking for help in starting and running it and names, guild design, etc. All the fun stuff of starting a guild.

@Hoarfrost Now is probably the right time to start discussing it. What are you thinking in terms of a site? I think there's a couple of things that make GSCH great that you aren't going to get with a premade guild site.

1. An Event system that empowers anyone to lead. This is important. One of the great things about GSCH I feel, is that I can hop on at almost any time and there's a group all set to go with open arms. When you only have 2 hours to play, LFG for an hour ruins it.

2. Fellowship points. I don't think we need anything as extensive but I do think (for some) it encourages participation in events and spontaneous guild grouping.

Other than that you just need an about page and a forum :)

I am also looking forward to where this game goes. I am on the Alpha server. I'd love to group up with you guys in game and really see what this game is about with friends. That was one of my biggest dissapointments with ESO was I had my wife, best friend, and his wife all together at launch and we were going to tear across the country side, except we could not because we couldn't do hardly anything together. Phasing issues galore, in quests, zones, or otherwise.

That is neither here nor there though. AA looks pretty promising a game to team up in, and honestly the only thing to get my mmo fix on for at least a year.

I'm not even sure how friending or anything like that works in the game yet sadly. I tend to be anti social when it comes to non GSCH. So message me back on here if anyone wants to get a group together for anything.

When trying to determine whether a game is worth purchasing or not, I ask myself these 5 questions:

1.  Will you need to sell an organ/child/spouse to pay for this game?

2.  Will buying this game lead to you sleeping/hiding in the couch in the living room?

3.  Will you actually play this game or will you get tired of it downloading and say screw it at 15%?

4.  Is your primary reason for purchasing the game because you can be a Transformer/GI Joe/My Little Pony/<insert favorite childhood cartoon character here>?

5.  No really, are you going to get in trouble for doing this?

Hopefully my in depth questions will help reveal your true destiny as it relates to Archeage.  If it's a tie, then the tiebreaker for me is that you can buy a cow that poos in this game.

Tell him  ArcheAge teaches moral responsibility and civic duty.  And when I say that, what I really mean is that it teaches you to ignore both things lol.

What this game needs to add is a vigilante super hero option where you can dress up in a costume of your own design and apprehend people who have broken the justice system.  They also need to allow you to dress up your mount in a sidekick costume.

As you can see, I spend most of my time in this game doing nothing of import.  Unless you count fertilizing my farm important for global warming.

Ok, I checked out the ArcheAge website, http://www.archeagegame.com/en/.

A few things from their website that caught my attention:

1) "Craft the best armor in the game."

Garyc - regarding you curiosity on the skill sets, one skill set is basically like a talent tree, it just looks slightly different on the GUI but it's no different from a soul in Rift, Talent tree in WOW.  The difference is that you can mix and match all of them, unlike Rift where you were limited to Rogue/Mage/Warrior/Cleric, it AA, you are able to mix roguelike trees with necromancer or sorcery style trees.

Elth-

Thank you for the clarification.  Is there any penalty (ie: gold cost) to change your skill set?  Or can you freely do this whenever you want?

1) "Craft the best armor in the game."
->> I HOPE this is true. This SHOULD be true for all MMOs, but sadly, it is not.

True, but it takes many rare mats (meaning, either weeks of playtime or thousands of gold) to craft a top end piece of gear.  The craft itself will take weeks/months to raise that high (due to labor constraints) however the items can be traded so some guilds rely on guild crafters to spread the work around.

2) "You’ll be able to play ArcheAge without purchasing the game or paying a subscription."
->> What's the catch? Seriously, what is the catch?

F2P can't own land, which you'd normally use to raise materials for crafting and trade packs.   Instead mats have to come from the AH at pretty steep prices. Also, F2P players have no offline labor regen.  Personally I'd never try to be a serious crafter in AA on a F2P account.

4) Six primary Skillsets (Battlerage, Sorcery, Archery, Vitalism, Occultism, Shadowplay).

It's a lot like souls in Rift, except your can level them all on a single character.

Probably the most important factor in making an effective build is combos -- bonus effects you get from using skills in a particular order, and the combos they produce. (Note, you can combo with other players too!)

Here's an example (Blighter stun build for 1v1).  Check on the combos tab to see what I mean!  http://arche-base.com/builds/generator#1.3.8/Jza1J32l3aa1

Lord- There are only 2-3 things you can't do without a subscription. 1. OWN land. If you are friends with someone with a sub or in a guild that has a hefty plot of land you can still use it if the original owner sets it that way. 2. Craft/Gather as frequently. These use labor points, and while not subbed labor regen is 5p/5m online and offline. With the sub its 10p/5m online and 5p/5m offline. 3. Post auctions on the auction house by default. There is also a Loyalty store, (ingame menu) that only subbed people can access.

And no, Trion didn't make this game all they are doing is relying stuff NA/EU players would like that they agree with, to XLGames in Korea and hoping XLGames will make it happen. All Trion is allowed to do is host it and translate it.

Dunno if you played Rift, Lord, but the AH works like it did there for F2P accounts.   For a one time cash shop purchase you can unlock the AH forever for a F2P account.  Or, subscribe and the AH is unlocked forever even if you revert to F2P status.

And, yes, just like Rift there's a way to pay a sub with in-game gold.  Other people pay real money for an item that grants cash shop credits, called "Apex" (in Rift it was called Rex).  They put this up on the AH, and you can buy it with in-game gold then use the store credits to pay your sub.

How does Land ownership work when your sub runs out?   Suppose I sub, buy some land, and then a few months down the road, I decide to play F2P for awhile.  Do I lose my land?

Yes you will lose it as each week you have to pay taxes to keep your land. To pay taxes you need to have a sub. No taxes no land =p

If you meet yourself on the testing track, don't make eye contact. Lab boys tell me that'll wipe out time. Entirely.

Garyc, you can have to pay taxes on your land, and to place the land you need to pay an initial tax, and tax payment is sub only. As for the auction house supposedly there's going to be a cash shop item that lets f2p post on the auction house. but without it you can only buy off it. And just to point it out but you dont need to own land to do everything, you can place crops on unprotected land, but doing that means someone else can uproot, or kill the thing you place because you can harvest from it.

Hummm....

Sounds like renting and not ownership. :)

But the game intrigues me, nonetheless.
