Honestly in a PvE game what does it matter? Runes of Magic had full fledge elite weapons you can buy with real cash and it's still running strong today. If it was a WvW based game then that could be a game breaker. Since when should we concern ourselves with our Dungeon running mates OPness? In my dungeon running experience the more powerful your friends the better. The bottom line is "Is it viable to play this game without having to buy anything" So far I've seen nothing that forces you to buy your way to victory. I think this is one of the best free to play games I've put my hand on.

I agree with Fog on this. Although I'm not a fan of retraining feats/powers being exclusive to Zen. If runes, resurrection scrolls or some other consumable costs real money, meh, only the ultra-hardcore progression players (the ones that are sponsored) will be forking out real coin to be on the top of the game. I wont spend money on it, I'll buy some character slots or maybe a new race or class when they unlock them but I'll never pay for consumables.

With the Zen to Diamond conversion system they have in place, there's really no NEED to buy anything. The biggest benefit of the cash shop that I can see is spending Zen will reduce the impact of any Time Gates Neverwinter has in place (spend Diamonds to speed tasks along, such as saving 18 hours training additional crafter assets). Right now, the market seems to be flooded with Diamonds because they started Founders and Guardians with SO many, but given time the exchange rates should look a bit better.

I love this game, although it is a new shiny. I did buy the founder's guardian pack but that's because the game impressed me right out of the gate with everything it offers me for free to play. I read through that post and all the comments. Unless you are a min/maxer and trying to be the most OP person in the game, i don't see a problem with it. I quit my last guild and came to gaiscioch because people stabbed each other in the back over loot. I won't see that happen again.I also played runes of magic and invested in their cash shop as well. The way I see it, I don't mind supporting a game if it's a good one. The only thing that interests me in the end is friendships I make along the way. I may buy more character slots but for now I am happy with a good mount and a puppy they gave me as well as the OP robe I got that drops junk on the ground:) Honestly if someone wants to be an OP raider I suggest they get a sub to WoW or Rift it's way cheaper than going free to play to raid, but this model has been around for a while and it's not worth min maxing in a game that charges for it. Other things in the game make it definetly worth playing though. Launches always have problems, but eventually the players that enjoy the game and want to stick around will do just that and you will have solid player base:)

I mostly agree with most of what was said. I'm still playing and having fun but I do like to have good information when it comes to pay models. As it stands there really doesn't appear to be much that isn't achievable prior to endgame and even then (depending on zen market value) it could still be achievable given enough time. Mostly just an informational post :)

Armor/Weapon Enchantments are for specific slots in your weapon/chest and grant special effects. They come in shards and have a chance to drop from Epic Dungeon bosses. You must combine 4 shards to create a Lesser version of the Enchantment. However, the success chance of fusion is at a staggeringly low 1%. To compensate, they have very strong effects. An example would be the Thunderhead Enchantment. However, the real kicker here is that these "Lesser" versions may be fused again to gain a stronger version. Those may also be fused again to create the strongest version. Ultimately, the Greater Thunderhead Enchantment will have a 30% on crit to damage and stun foes. To create the strongest Enchantment possible, it will cost 160 dollars and 64 shards. Unlike companions, these can be used in PvP.

I did notice that they had a diamond-to-zen exchange, but is it like in Champions Online, where you trade in diamonds to someone else for zen that they have? If it is, then I doubt I will ever use it, as going by Champions Online, most people were selling 5 zen for 20k of that game's version of the diamonds. If I continue to play this game (haven't logged in since Friday, I believe), looks like I will be stuck with the 2 slots, having those lockboxes take up space, and being stuck with the basic companions you get from the quest at 15 (or 16).

It's a currency exchange that people post for zen to AD and AD to zen.The prices are around 489 AD for 1 zen last time i checked but it's mostly because the market is flooded right now due to everyone having been given AD with their founder's packs. I got 600k in mine alone plus I had zen already in my account. It will take a little while for the market to settle, but it will as people drop out of the game and it stabilizes more. If I remember right you can also post what you want to buy and sell for and order it, you just may have to wait longer.

They have a similar system for Champions Online. (not sure about STO, but I assume it has one) Its worked very well for a couple of years, so if folks have any doubts about the currency system, don't worry, its not something new that they're testing on you. ;)

The system in STO is very similar but there isnt anything game breaking in it. I leveled to cap without ever spending a dime and I see Neverwinter being the same way. I'm lvl 30 now and I haven't had any trouble. I don't even use the enchantments in items because my gear changes so fast. I've spent $10 so far and it was just to unlock character slots and to buy some keys for lockboxes. I guess im a sucker for gambling lol. I really like this game and have been a STO player on and off since launch and I can say since PWE bought STO the game has improved dramatically. I'm happy to have a very fun game to play as I see fit and a game that doesn't force me to pay a set amount.

I have to admit the cash shop is very disappointing. But I think if it's looked at as a game to AD&D crawl with friends it can still be a very fun game without spending dime one.

Pretty much all of the nondtop whining on the forums about Pay to Win is almost exclusively coming from the hardcore PVPers. That enchantment that costs $160 is a huge benefit in PVP. I wish hardcore PVPers would stick to games designed from the ground up for PVP like GW2. This game is obviously a party based PVE game where each class has a specific role to play in a 5 man dungeon crawl. For anyone to expect the classes to be balanced against one another in PVP is just not reasonable IMO.

"However, the success chance of fusion is at a staggeringly low 1%." Why do so many games do this? I downloaded NVW last night and had fun for a couple hours, but I can't get invested in another RNG enchantment game. It will just give me more anger than fun in the long run.

Something you might want to keep in mind here -- F2P games come in two general varities: 1. Ones that equalize drops 2. Ones that slant drops toward purchase to progress Neverwinter is of the latter variety. Yes, you can play without spending anything what; it's just going to take you a bit longer to get the same things that others are paying to have quicker. In Neverwinter's case, the slant is most obvious on "end game" items (which makes sense if you think about it, particularly in that you can slot lvl 60 items into companions at level 1). They want you to "pay to win", but they're just a wee bit south of the line where it becomes "required". Most F2P games are a good bit further south of that line, which is why it seems so apparent in the game.

If it ain't fixed, break it until it is.
