In writing the original first lesson, I was in a fog and completely neglected to demonstrate how to greet someone you've never met before!  While Dia duit works without adressing the person directly, you can also ask a person their name to be more familiar with them.

Focloir nua (New Vocabulary)

Ce'n t-ainm ata' ort? (Kane tine-um ah-tah ort)         What is your name? (Ulster, Connacht)

C'ainm ata' ort? (Kine-um ah-tah ort)                         What is your name? (less formal version)

____ ata' orm. ( ____ ah-tah Or-im)                           ____ is my name.

Cad is ainm duit? (Kahj iss ine-um gitch)                    What is your name? (Linster, Munster)

____ is ainm dom. (____ iss ine-um dumm)               ____ is my name.

Ce' he' tusa? - masculine (Kay he tussah)                  Who are you?

Ce' hi' tusa - feminine (Kay he tussah)                       Who are you?

Mise ____.  (Misheh ____)                                          I am ____.

For those of you atute observers, the second name asking "C'ainm ata' ort" is actuall just a contraction of the first "Ce'n t-ainm ata' ort".  The first is slightly more formal and proper, the second is what kids on a playground might use to ask each other names - neither is inappropriate to use in any situation though... just the first one is slightly more formal.

"Ce'n t-ainm ata' ort" is answered by "___ ata' orm."  Much in the same way that "Cad is ainm duit" is answered with "___ is ainm dom"  If you mess up and confuse the two endings, it is still fine, but the person you are talking to might think you're a wee touched and probably stray away from any intellectual conversation with you... practice will make perfect!  Although you shouldn't confuse those two, if you are really confused you can ALWAYS answer with "mise ___" which litterally means "I am ____."

Here is a sample conversation of two people who haven't met before:

Carl: Dia duit... Cad is ainm duit?

Fernando: Dia's Muire duit, Fernando is ainm dom, agus tusa?

Carl: Mise Carl, cad e' mar ata' tu', Fernando?

Fernando: Ta' me' go maith, agus tu' fein?

Carl: Ta' me' go measartha.

This is the English translation:

Carl:  Hey, what's your name?

Fernando: Hello, my name is Fernando, and yours?

Carl: I'm Carl, how are you, Fernando?

Fernando: I am good, and you?

Carl: I'm fine.

The final way of asking someone is slightly rude and abrupt if you do not introduce yourself first.  To do that you would say "Mise ____" and then ask "Ce' he' tusa".  The reason it is rude is because you're literally asking someone "Who ARE you" and can start a few fights you don't intend to.  If you use this one remember to ALWAYS introduce yourself first.

I hope this gives a better grasp on greetings, the following are some suggested exercises to help you retain information beyond reading my posts.

Exercises

1) Create a dialog introducing Pedro to Ann.

2) Write the 3 ways to ask someone their name and the answer 5 times each.

3) Practice the pronunciation of the words and become more familiar with sound vs spelling (this will take a long time to achieve, but it will click one day if you keep it up, I promise).

4) Review lesson 1 and redo the exercises there, you may use information from this lesson.
