Hello fellow gamer and mouse users.  I need your help.

As I've grown older ( I hate when that happens) my gaming has surly suffered.     It's why I don't group most often.

I feel shy and embarrassed asking those I'm with to slow down, can we take it a little slow because I need to read the quests, etc.

I thought maybe my being able to do any PvP at all was over until I saw this mouse the other day that had movement keys on the side of the mouse.  I had an epiphany that maybe now I can move/jump my avatar around with the mouse and then use the keyboard for the fancy sword wielding and spells..

with all that said is there a woman or guy with small hands that can recommend a good mouse with the keys on the side of the mouse?

Thanks

Phyre

I don't know if I have what's considered small hands, but I use a Logitech G402.  I haven't had a issues with it, but it does only have a few buttons on the side, I needed something simple.  That said I know some of the others in the same series come with more buttons on the mouse.

i'm very fond of my Razor Death Adder, the 2 side buttons are mapped to my spamable skill and my ultimate, use the scroll wheel button for push to talk.  tried both the Logitech and razor 12 side buttons...my thumb does not seem to be coordinated enough to make use of these.

also went with an Orbweaver game pad, more comfortable for my hand and easier to find the right button (than the keyboard).

I'd like to think most folks in groups would be happy to go at your pace, lots of people want to read the story line.

Agreed, I will slow down if need be for people!  As for me, I use a basic mouse with a button on each side and a wheel.  It works, but you'd probably want something with more buttons for moving like that!

I think maybe http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826816061 would work well for you.  It is considered small by many people, so maybe it would fit well with what you want.  The button placement also looks acceptable.

I got myself a Razer Naga and never looked back since then - it's the one with a number pad beside it.

It can look and feel overwhelming at first but I cant live without it when come to gaming now. Most of the time i only use 8 out of the 12 buttons on the side mainly for things like, skills, dodge, heals, interrupts, targeting and push to talk voice communication. The newer version even comes with moving the mouse roller left and right - which gives another two more keys.

I am also a "more mature" gamer and can totally relate.  I too pick and choose what events I join so that I don't slow anyone down.  I have been using a Logitech G600 gaming mouse for years and love it!  I actually bought a spare when they went on sale for fear they would discontinue the model.  It has 12 programmable buttons on the side which is more than enough to get me through any games I play.

I'm a bit confused as to why you're wanting to retrain your brain.  That's a lot more difficult at older age than coping with slower reflexes.

My suggestion would be to try and minimize any brain re-training, by keeping your left hand on movement duty and finding a mouse that will allow for remapping your skill keys, while keeping the same numerical order, ie. skill key #1 equals side mouse button #1, etc.  A couple of the above mentioned do exactly that.

Honestly, a lot of people macro.  It's not that you're slower in your old age (although that is true, just not as much of a factor as people think), it's more that technology allows for more automation of multiple tasks by a single key or button, as well as re-mapping an input device, in order to provide an interface that is more intuitive to the user, rather than clumping your way around a standard keyboard, that developers didn't really map as optimally as they could have.  (which is a fault of hardware's design, not developer)

Also, keep in mind that many modern keyboards are fully re-programmable.  Professional gamers use those, because to be perfectly honest, conventional keyboards were never designed for gaming, so even the pro gamers find that they have "performance problems"... so, it's not just you, or your age.

I understand your concerns, because I, too, am getting older, but I still try to "old school" my gaming and what shows more than anything, when playing against younger players, is my unwillingness to adapt to modern input designs, rather than "old age".

FYI, wanting to read quest text is not a sign of slowing down... it's a sign of wanting to enjoy the bloody game instead of rushing through it.  ;)

I have MS and it primarily impacts my hands, especially the left one. I do a few things to switch things up, but I usually stick to the old way of things mostly due to muscle memory. I had a LONG time of typing before MS hit and probably half of my gaming time on line (total of 16 years now) done before my left hand had issues.

I know people slow down for me and not just because I'm an elder. ;) I have bowed out of AvA in ESO if I knew things were really not up to par no matter which way I go.

Besides the standard mouse and keyboard options I have a logitech left handed game pad I'll put in my lap and have the keys mapped as close to 1-5 and the letter keys below. This way the fingers can still do the walking, but my arm can relax better than being up on the keyboard.

I have naga mouse with 12 buttons on the side for when the left hand is totally useless and there just isn't anything on TV or a movie I want to watch. ::chuckles:: Like Sekk noted, it is a lot of muscle memory and my right hand tires out faster even if I put the primary things on the first 3 of the side buttons. I have an RZ01 model that works well for small to medium hands.

In the end it is better to just jump in and have fun letting the group know you want to read everything and take your time doing it. =) And for that PvP - sometimes I just play red shirt bait because I know I can't respond right, but it lets people know where the enemy really is. Haven't PvPd in awhile though mostly due to it winding up on the meh side in ESO for me and we don't have the good stuff in BDO yet. I still love how GW2 does it even if I don't have much time to play too many games.

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D

I highly suggest getting a Razor Naga or Logitech G600, I have used both and recommend thme equally. Use the keys on the side of the mouse in place of of the numbers row(1 to +) on your keyboard. Additionally assign ctrl or shift to do f1-f12 instead. (either via the mouse software or via in game bindings)

This allows the left hand to focus on movement and the right hand to focus on skills and targeting.

I'll put in another vote for the Naga. I got one about six years ago and couldn't fathom playing games without it now.  It does seem daunting at first, but, as others have pointed out, after a few days it comes down to muscle memory and your thumb just "knows" which button is which.

I recall, about 15 years ago, I used the Npad+arrows to do my movements (way games were designed by default) and due to the wrist twisting, I developed compression issues, so had to switch to WASD and try to retrain the brain and muscle memory.

Been trying to adapt to the "left-side" keypad on this Steelseries Merc Stealth, for the last couple of years, and I still fumble around (it's more design flaws w/this keyboard, than my brain, though), so thinking of going back to a standard size keyboard.

But trying to switch from left-handed WASD movement to right-handed mouse at this point in my life, would just be impossible.  Skill activation, sure, because those are sporadic and you mostly have to think about what skill you want to use, so there's a conscious purpose in having the brain tell your muscles what they need to do.

However, the constant brain-to-muscle transmissions that require character movement, would be very difficult for me to re-train to an 'almost involuntary' thought-state.

edit: Forgot to mention, that I used the Npad+arrow keys with my left hand, while right-hand used mouse, so there wasn't any re-training of right-side/left-side handed task assignment, but instead, simply muscle memory.

I have been using a combination of gaming pad and mouse w/ side buttons for many years.  I really only use the keyboard to type messages in chat.  I love it...not sure I could ever go back to WASD.  I'm currently using a Razer Orbweaver for my left hand and a Razer Naga for my right hand.  I use the d-pad on the Orbweaver to move back and forth and strafe.  I hold the right mouse button down to turn.  I have jump and dodge mapped to buttons on my mouse so I can use my right thumb to trigger those actions.
