I had just come across the fact that the PVP is being developed by the same team that developed DOAC PVP play! Which if you love great pvp means this should be epic!

Pretty sure DAOC Devs did WH PVP as well.... If they can recreate the DAOC experience, great! If they recreate the WH Experience... well...

While it is true that Mythic devs created Warhammer as vaygrent stated , as well as DAOC most of the org DAOC devs that actualy created DAOC were gone before they made Warhammer . That`s why warhammer while it was fun was not as good compared to org DAOC . Supposedly the Devs working on TESo pvp are the org DAOC devs so should be good . also remember SWTOR had mythic devs from warhammer that worked on their PVP system and it was crap haha . Most of the devs that were at Mythic after all the guys that created DAOC left were just maintience mode and had no hand in creating DAOC , but they did work on warhammer and SWTOR , so i hope those guys stay where they are hehe .

For the first couple of years, DAOC RvR was great, then it slowly went south until it hit rock bottom around Trials of Atlantis time. I think people either weren't playing around then, or just forgot how craptastic the RvR got. They just recently, in the last year or so, brought it back to the release quality RvR that we knew and loved so well.

Vaygrent, matt left mythic with most of his team just before the launch of toa in daoc because they didnt like the direction it was going. I think only 1 of them actually worked on warhammer. The rest of this team has been working on eso since 2007.

I didnt like "vanilla" pvp in daoc - I did like the Frontiers on the classic servers post catacombs it think it was, which was frontiers minus the toa stuff.

Vanilla PvP in DAOC was created in 2001, in that day there was NO OTHER game to even try it to that extent. You shouldn't judge the potential success of a team that has more than a decade of experience building RvR games. It's been 12 years, you learn a lot in that time. Not to mention the tech available then was hardly what it was when new frontiers launched. The things they could do with new fronteers came to be because of the improvements in the graphics card industry. Remember the Geforce 3 was the brand new top of the line video card in 2001. New frontiers was launched 4 years later when the GeForce 6 was mainstream. There's quite a bit of horsepower difference between these generations let alone the improvements to the way graphics were handled as a whole. You certainly can't blame Ultima Online for being 2D when 3D games hadn't even gone mainstream yet. The game development industry is limited by the tech available at the games creation. New tech gives new toys which can then be used. I for one am excited to see what the evolution of RvR looks like 6 years later.

I was not making a judgment based on GFX at all. Vanilla DAOC RvR didnt offer the amount of things to strive to complete (objectives, quests, towers etc). As I recall, RvR pre-frontiers was a lot of roaming 8v8 groups (I came from Midgard, so It was alot of bomb groups). Frontiers offered us Cataputs/Trebs/scorpions, towers, keeps with breakable walls, quests for RR and more. I got into PVP in Frontiers MORE than Vanilla because A: A LOT of people were out there and B: Some of the battles were huge (at its peak), and even on dial-up I was still able to participate with over 200 on screen easy, but beyond that, the biggest factor was I didnt have to be in an elite 8man dedicated RVR group to have fun, and there were numerous things to do. So, when I think of great PVP I think of Frontiers for those reasons, and hope that the daoc devs recreate that experience (and more) for ESO - and not some version of BG's/RvR Lakes like those we saw in WH.

The key here is Matt Firor. He was a pioneer with Vanilla RvR and as stated above left before ToA for differing of opinions about the game's direction. ESO will be his first real MMO since then (has only done consultative work since he left Mythic.) WAR tried to capture the essence of DAoC's RvR but did not have the tech nor the minds behind it to make it happen. ZOS has both the minds (Firor) and the tech (EVE's server tech team) to really try to create DAoC RvR-evolved.

One thing I miss most about DAoC was all the classes and how they were "different" in each realm. Each class was more specific so it made working together more important as well.

@Pyrrhic I agree, class distinction is important. I think (if I read/hear things correctly) that they are attempting to create distinct classes but allowing people to pick up skills/spells/etc. they want to compliment their character. We will have to wait and see how effective they are of course.

The Guardian (UK) posted a two-part interview with Matt Firor on their website earlier this week. Part 1 – Elder Scrolls Online set to prove (very) big is still beautiful In the first of two interviews, game director Matt Firor explains the thinking behind the game and why pockets can't be picked Part 2 – Elder Scrolls Online: How PVP allow players total control Part II of our exclusive interview with game director Matt Firor focuses on player v player battles I never played DAoC but wish I had...

8V8 didn't become popular until just before ToA released, as did bot parking. Vanilla RvR was great, but they started messing with it and it de-evolved until just the last year or so, when they started working on returning it to its former glory. ToA released in late 2003, so I was curious... if Matt left before ToA, then what did he do for 4 years? So I checked his wiki and he's credited for being the Executive Producer of both Trials of Atlantis and Catacombs xpacs. His departure from Mythic is listed as 2006, then he founded Ultra Mega Games, a consulting firm, then was hired by Zenimax Media in 2007. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Firor

@Sekkerhund ToA = Makes me =( I think Matt Firor will do a good job at the helm for ESO. *Also one of the coolest features I have heard so far about their RvR is the fact of supply. If your castle runs out of supply you can be starved out. I think that is really awesome because it makes capturing towns important. Also it limits zergs from defending castles because they will be forced to sally from their keep.

I think the PVP will be good and dynamic. I'm hoping they take collision detection OUT of the equation between avatars like WAR tried. There was nothing worse than storming a keep shoulder to shoulder and getting pushed off the ledge. Fog had it right about the most of the original DAOC team leaving around TOA release. I wasn't a fan of TOA when it released because it was mind-numbingly hard to PVE, and I just wanted to RVR. While I'd like to have some good PVE content (it's one of the reasons I can't play DAOC anymore; the PVE is old, stale and reminds me how old the game is!), if RVR stinks, this game will flop.
