Ahoy,

Until now, I have not played any Elder Scroll games, and am just now learning about Elder Scrolls Online.  (Thank you for posting that video in the other post.  It's got me excited).

In the other post, it was suggested that we play Skyrim to get a feel for how Elder Scrolls Online will play.  I took that suggestion and just now installed Skyrim on my PC.  As an Elder Scrolls newbie, I wanted to share my first impressions.

GRAPHICS

First, I want to say the graphics are A-mazing.  Don't get me wrong, games don't have to have top-notch graphics to be a success.  But the graphics in Skyrim are impressive.

INTERFACE

Next, I wanted to comment on the interface.  One of my pet peeves are games where the interface interferes with the gameplay.  In the few minutes I played, I loved how there was no interface that got in the way of the viewing area.  For a short while, I did not even know an interface even existed, until I accidentally hit "M" instead of spacebar (jump).  Then I saw there was a Map.

CONTROLS

I also wanted to talk about the controls.  The game starts out by using the WASD keys for movement.  Personally, I don't like using WASD to move.  All my keyboards have up/down/left/right arrow keys.  I want to use those (or use my mouse for movement).  But alas, the mouse is reserved for combat (attack/block).  I do not know if its possible to re-assign keys due to the next paragraph.

MOTION SICKNESS

Unfortunately, I tend to get motion sickness in some games (mostly first person shooter (FPS) games).  I'd like to point out that I never got motion sickness playing a PC game, until now.  (I've been fine with all other games - Everquest, DAOC, WAR, RIFT, GW1, GW2.).

When I tried Skryim, I played for about 30 minutes.  The first 20-25 minutes were great.  The last 5 minutes or so was a struggle, due to motion sickness.

I am left to wonder if WASD is in some strange way connected to my motion sickness.  All WASD FPS games I have tried have left me feeling ill.

After I recover, I am going back into Skyrim to see if i can change the controls away from WASD.  Am hoping I can set up the movement/controls to something similar like GW2, which I think is rather nice.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I WANT to like ESO when it comes out.  For anyone out there reading this who has played Skyrim, please feel free to comment about your experience.

UPDATE 1:

I'm finding it difficult to change the way the game looks/feels.  At the game launch, I can change it to windowed mode (which helped out with the motion sickness).  However, in windowed mode, you cannot move or resize the window. (insert frowny icon here>.  Also, when going to window mode, I now have 2 cursors - windows cursor, and the fancy game cursor.  Also the sound is now muffled.  I was able to fix the sound issue by going into the control panel, and selecting "Loudness Equalization" under Sound.

I also do not care for having to play the game via Steam.  I miss the old days when you could install the game directly on your computer.  Games just worked as you would expect them - right out of the box.  Having to create a Steam account, and log into Steam and adjust my sound and other settings is a fuss.

Please forgive me for ranting.  Like I said, I WANT to like this game.  I will continue playing Skyrim and offer more insights/updates after continued game play.  I'm sure it will get better!  It HAS to get better?  Right?

UPDATE 2:

I also wanted to comment on the optional expansions.  When I purchased Skyrim, I also purchased the Dawnguard and HearthFires expansions.  These were offered as inexpensive digital downloads through Steam.  For those of you who are getting into Skyrim for a test drive before Elder Scrolls Online comes out later this year, I would recommend that you do not buy the expansions right away.  It seems most of the expansion content is not available until you reach lvl 10 or higher.  After 3 hours of playing, i'm still level 1. (Of course, I tend to level slowly, as I like to explore every nook and cranny).  I believe one of the expansions lets you become a vampire, but you cannot create a vampire during character creation.

Well, one good thing about Elder Scrolls, is you can play in 3rd person view. Just use your mouse scroll wheel to scroll out and you will be in 3rd person view. Although, in 3rd person view, you do not have the crosshairs to help you target your bow/spells, which I do not like. That might be different in Skyrim. Not sure, as I haven't tried Skyrim because I don't know if my computer could handle it. Been playing Oblivion, though. And that one doesn't have the crosshairs except in first person view. You could always try it out in 3rd person view. I know, from what I have heard, that ESO will have actual targeting (like in Rift, WoW, etc) which will help out being able to play in 3rd person and not be completely gimped if you want to cast spells/use bow+arrows. I hope they do have that style of targeting, as I don't really like playing in first person view much. As for WASD... most seem to use those because they are close to the left shift, alt, and ctrl keys, the tab key, and the 1-5 number keys, which in ESO, will be what you press to use your abilities/spells.

OreoFox: Thank you for the tips. I tried 3rd person view, and combined with windowed mode, it has improved the "feel" of the game. In regards to Elder Scrolls Online, i'm glad to know there will be targeting (as there is in Rift). I wanted to let you know that in Skyrim, the crosshairs persist in 3rd person view. Of course, i'm still new and dont know where to see my spells or bow yet. On a different tangent, I was told to deliver an item to an NPC, and when I entered their home, the guard attacked me and killed me. lol.

I checked out a video showing Elder Scrolls Online creature: The Dreugh. It's an insect-like creature that reminds of the 'Skitters' from the TV show "Falling Skies". This looks so awesome! http://elderscrollsonline.com/en/news/post/2012/12/17/creating-eso-the-dreugh Can't wait to see what other monsters are in store for ESO. Ok, back to Skyrim... I want to figure out how to get property to build a house.

Myplan to get a house get a house you have to kill your first dragon then go speak to the king he tell about a little property that up for sale. Next go to the store near the inn and chop wood carry the wood to the inn rinse repeat until you have enough money to buy your house. another way go to steam look for skyrim mods and down load the start houses there.

I found the RMB/LMB combat to be a struggle in the beginning but I persisted with it and it actually becomes more fluid and natural over time. Of course, after playing GW2 I'm finding it hard to go back to RMB/LMB combat for Dawnguard and Hearthfire but it's like riding a bike, it's starting to come back to me. If you are getting motion sickness, try to see if it is related to Field of View (or FOV). Some console ports have a narrow FOV which brings on motion sickness faster on PC. I had this problem with Battlefield Bad Company 2 and could adjust the FOV by finding and editing the settings in your home drive.

It should be mentioned that Bethesda (or the studio responsible *for* the Elder Scrolls games so far) isn't actually behind the development of ESO, and I think that's where I find fault with it. It doesn't "feel" to me like a...Morrowind, or Oblivion/Skyrim game because visually it's kind of "off". Overall, I'm against it because the Elder Scrolls have been single-player experiences and that shapes the world and how you *interact* with it, I think it'd be a detriment to my love of the series to like...go into some ruins and see XXcoolguynoobXX alongside me >.>. \

can't wait to see how ESO plans to make it feel likes skyrim, they claim to want to appeal to single players too i only played fallout 3 and skyrim from bethesda, both were incredibly immersive, i wasn't able to feel any of that in gw2 due to the simple story line and meaningless pve quests, which has been an MMO thing it seem like.. @Lavanderie I can totally see your point. I think Zenimax Online (which if you haven't yet, take a look at their staff...very impressive resumes) is out to make not another installment of TES but rather to make a great MMO using all the successful game mechanics and systems that allow us to play in a persistent Tamriel with others. Of course they are attempting to implement as much of the freedoms of gameplay we have become accustomed to in TES games as they can. Bethesda is still doing more TES titles and ESO is not meant to change that trend. On a side note: I +1 stronger naming rule sets and/or a way to hide player names from my view. -xXxArthiscoolxXx

Yeah I don't actually see ESO as an extension of the Elder Scrolls games. The Single player games are still going to be made for many years to come and to me ESO will just be a fun shoot off. Age of Conan (FUNCOM) butchered much of the lore of Robert E. Howard and yet it was quite a good game until they completely changed their design to mimic WoWs' itemisation. I would still be playing AoC now if they hadn't pulled an NGE on us. Warhammer Online was also completely different to what I expected a Warhammer game to be like and yet I had an amazing time playing WAR right up till Rift's launch. Just because Elder Scrolls Online looks a little different from Skyrim, doesn't mean it's going to be bad. I'm really looking forward to it. I think it will be one of the last themepark MMO's of this generation.

aside from graphics ie graphics looked bad in morrowind , morrowind was actualy a better game . i thought then obvlion and skyrim . skyrim was basicly dumbed down compared to daggerfall, morrowind, obvlion it`s still good but not as good as far as game play compared to previous titles in the series .

I haven't looked recently and compared but I bet if you downloaded some graphic and texture mods for morrowind and cranked the settings up it might not look terribly bad, won't get close to skyrim but might be an acceptable level to play. Just be warned of the millions and millions of nudity mods you will have to search through if you start looking to mod your elder scrolls...

Is the motion sickness in Skyrim caused by Field of View? If so, it should be possible to adjust field of view no?

In most cases motion sickness can be solved by adjusting the FoV. First you need to find an angle that works best for you. To do that, load the game up as you would normally for play. When loaded into the game world, bring up the command console (by pressing the ` key), type fov, press enter. What will return is the value the fov is currently set to. Now, start adjusting the value by typing fov ### where ### is the angle at which you want to set it to. Most people I've talked to with this problem increase the value to something like 90 (I think the default value is 60 or 70). So in this case type fov 90, which will adjust your view angle accordingly. Play around with different settings to find one you like. Once you have a value your satisfied with, we will have to set this value to be persistent. To do that in Skyrim you need to edit your skyrim.ini file found in My Documents -> My Games -> Skyrim -> Skyrim. You can open to edit the file in any text editor (though I strongly suggest notepad++). Once you have the file loaded into an editor, scroll down to the [General] stanza. At the bottom of that stanza (meaning in before the next section starts with [Insert Word Here]), add the line "fdefaultfov=###" without the quotes and replacing ### with your value found earlier. Lastly save the changes and exit. Now, everytime you load into game, you should be set to that FoV value.

I loved Daggerfall and Morrowind, and think Oblivion was my favorite. I could just never get into Skyrim for some reason. It always felt like there was a half second lag when I moved the mouse. Drove me absolutely crazy and I could never figure out how to fix it. Any ideas?

That sounds like mouse acceleration is disabled for you. The fix is pretty similar to FoV explained above, but instead when editing skyrim.ini look for the [Controls] stanza and add the line bMouseAcceleration=1 if you don't see it there. You can toggle it off by setting it to bMouseAcceleration=0 if there's a problem.
