I know everybody does not read the same type of book.  I was wondering how many active readers we have in the Family and wanted to see what you all read.  Who is into History type books; Fiction type books; Fantasy type books; Sci Fi type books; Romance type books; Mystery type books; Religious Fiction type books; Religious History type books;  Western type books; etc.

Please feel free to throw out what fits you best or what multiple styles fit you best.  If we have two huge bases of types we can do multiple book clubs that are split by genre.  I am a big advocate of reading and would love to see my Gaiscioch brothers and sisters pick up a book at least once a month.  If you like playing mmo's I think you would REALLY enjoy books.  They craft entire worlds and stories that like to dance around in your mind :).  It is a blast :).

So Please throw out what you like or even think you would be interested in.  Type out reasons if you feel like doing so also so that others can help you find your style :).

As always have fun :)

I'm mostly fantasy focused when it comes to reading, but I also like John Grisham and Dan Brown. Terry Pratchett is my all time favourite author, closely followed by David Eddings.

I have only fantasy books, and typically that's all I read. I enjoy steampunk, but have never read any books of that type.

When I take a break from Epic Fantasy, which is the most appealing to me for some reason I will branch into Biography type books on occasion, usually American History though I really enjoy Western Civ history and art. I think Michael Crichton spins amazing novels worth reading. I sometimes get on kicks by him and Tom Clancy. When I get nestalgic I go back to my love of reading with JRR Tolken, David Eddings, and Robert Jordan. I am currently rereading the Wheel of Time and on book 2 of that series. I have not read the last 3 books of that series so no spoilers. Sometimes I'll read a mystery/thriller. A decade ago I seemed to have read everything Steven King has written and that is very extensive. Some of his stories still hang around in my head influencing some of things I imagine. He is probably the second best story teller I have read behind Patrick Ruthfuss limited works. Time will tell with Patrick if he can maintain his breathtaking story. Such a high bar has been set. With Steven King who was often consistently an amazing arthur with so many books to read. I would feel amiss If I didn't include that I read the Bible once in a while as well. And that brings me to the Spirtual/ Self Help books/ Philosophy things I like to sink my teeth into. Two favorite books of Self Help are, "Rich Dad Poor Dad" and "7 Habits of Highly Effective People". Both those books helped shift my thinking in ways that helped me tremendously. I really hate being a victim and those books can really empower you to feel the influence you have over your own life. As you can tell...when I get done with my work at work...I can really ramble. Thanks for the topic as I see in so many ways that I like to share much of my life and books with all of you. Books are such a huge influence on me as to not really know how much influence they have.

I read a lot of different things. My hubby wonders about how I can devour a book in short order and keep track of long intricate plots. Being a Christian I definitely read and study my Bible along with related books. Also Christian fiction, found some authors I really liked. Now most of these fiction books were EASY to devour fast due to the genre mostly. Have plenty of Fantasy and Sci/fi on my shelves, but going to give a lot of those away to the library to sell just because someone else might as well enjoy them too and the local library can make a little dough. Also ready Tom Clancy, Lee Child, Grisham and stuff like that. Currently reading Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six when not gaming or working on the church's websites.

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D

I read mainly Sci/Fi, Fantasy books and Stephen King. Right now i'm reading the fifth book of G.R.R. Martins "A Song of Ice and Fire". After i finish this series i think i reread Frank Herbert's Dune series or Stephen Kings "The Dark Tower". The other Series i want to read, but i'm a bit afraid of is "The Foundation Series" by Isaac Asimov. I don't know if i could ever finish it without forgetting most of the beginning thus making the story somewhat incomplete. Maybe i wait until i'm retired and just focus on this. :)

I read Sci-fi and Fantasy almost exclusively, but I also REALLY enjoy the old pulp adventure books by Burroughs - Tarzan, John Carter etc. Markus - Do not fear Foundation... Its MUCH easier to follow than Game of Thrones ;) And as for Dune, I would recommend reading those books in the order they were published (the original six books by Frank Herbert... THEN switch to the newer books by Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson), instead of trying to read the whole block of books chronoligically. For Foundation, I would recommend reading chronologically: I Robot, the Robot novels, the Galactic Empire novels, then the Foundation novels ;)

History, biography, science/mathematics, travel, historical fiction, basically anything that strikes my fancy when browsing the "new books" shelves at my local libraries. I vacillate between fiction and non-fiction periods. Lately, I tend to read much more non-fiction. My latest read that I can highly recommend is "The End of Your Life Book Club" by Will Schwalbe.

I'm mostly a fantasy fan, but i do like some sci-fi and regular fiction. Mercedes Lackey is my favorite author and i have read almost all of her books. Currently, i've been dividing my time between the Guild Wars books and Mercedes' Valdemar series books. Every once in a while, i grab some random fiction that is on the best seller list just to see if it's good. Some of them really are! One of the ones that stands out most to me was Friday Night Knitting Club, by Kate Jacobs. The story was just profound and got me into knitting as a hobby! Basically, i'm not really picky, i just like to read good stories ^^; edit: spelling ><

I tend towards science-fiction and fantasy, with a bit of animal-fiction, like Brian Jacques "Redwall" series, thrown in. Just a few favorite series Sci-fi: Ender's Game (and sequels) by Orson Scott Card, Starship Troopers (the book - not a series, but a sci-fi classic) by Robert Heinlein, Foundation series by Isaac Asimov Fantasy: The Belgaraid and Malloreon by David Eddings, the Dragonriders of Pern* by Anne Mcaffrey Animal Fiction: Redwall, specifically Salamandastron, Lord Brocktree, The Long Patrol *Note and possible Disclaimer: This series is a good one, but upon rereading it over the past week or so, some of the content is for an older age group. I'd forgotten this when I had originally posted.

I read Dean Koontz, Stephen King, John Saul, Peter Straub. I also write non-fiction so I tend to read about a lot of different things. However my favorite is horror/supernatural type. Cold Fire by Koontz is a favorite because it is set in the same area where I was living at the time I was reading. It is a strange feeling to know the places where things are going on and living in the same place. LOL

I read fiction for entertainment leaning strongly towards Science fiction and fantasy.  While I enjoy Epic works like David Drake, Terry Goodkind, and Robert Jordan I also like lighter fare for relaxation.  I have read Steven King, Dean R Koontz etc but not as frequently.

Scifi, fantasy, historical fiction, westerns, horror, non-fiction.   Pretty much anything if it looks interesting.  But mostly sci/fi & fantasy.  Modern fantasy is a genre I enjoy quite a bit...Charles de Lint, Neil Gaiman and James Blaylock come to mind there.

Stephen Eriscksons Malazen series is another I enjoyed immensely. Even if he did kill Whiskeyjack.

i know this is going to sound like a cop out... but... i read what is interesting.

originally i was focused on scifi/fantasy. but as i became older i ... ok so i am older... what of it.. ;-) i found that i really was interested in storied that were engaging.

i never thought i would find books like say ... snow falling on cedars interesting... but, when i read it it really pulled me in and i loved it.

likewise i have founs other languages a great source of material since most of the books in usa are mainstream and really never break out of the mold which limit them in what they have to offer.

let me know if you want a recommendation and are willing to think outside the box if i happen to suggest something from an area other then what your used to.

I'm a bookworm.  I'll read anything and everything, but I mainly read Fantasy and Sci-Fi with mysteries and thrillers thrown in.   Just finished Dan Brown's Inferno - definitely my favorite of his books.

Favorite series are Melanie Rawn's Dragon Prince and Dragon Star.

I actually liked Robert Jordon's Wheel of time the second time I read it (first time I only made it through book 5, but for some reason second time through it was really good and Brandon Sanderson did great job finishing it) - which got me into the Mistborn series- very good.

Most books listed on these posts I've read :)  Most of them at least twice.  List is too long of all the fantasy and sci-fi I like.

I read primarily Fantasy and historical stuff in lines of The Bolyn Girls. That era intrigues me. Also some fantasy with lite romance tossed in for flavor. That said give me anything by Marion Zimmer Bradley! I also like Mercedes Lackey, The Recluse series, Diana Gabaldon, Kelly Armstrong, Deborah Harknes...etc...with with some Stephen King and the like thrown in for spice!
