Would-be healer needs some pointers

I haven't done much AvA yet (and most of what I have done has involved using siege gear to pew-pew walls.)   But on this past Tuesday I jumped into the ClubGaiscioch raid with my new (lvl 13) templar to try healing for the first time ever, in any game.

It was interesting but I don't think I was particularly effective so I'm looking for some help.  (Surprise, playing support is harder than playing DPS!)

1.  Are there any particular add-ons I should be running?

2.  How do you keep track of the tanks?   In WoW the key folks could give themselves icons over their heads to make them easier to locate in a crowd.  In ESO, however, everyone has the same "v" floating over their heads.  I could never locate my group leader much less figure out who was a tank.

3.  It appears that the default raid frames won't let you select a target from the team grid.  Is that true or am I doing it wrong?

4.  Can anyone recommend a good how-to-heal-in-ESO-AvA video/blog?

Hi, those are some good questions and I had them myself after my first couple of tromps through Cyrodil. I'm rolling a templar and have healed some AVA so I'll give my perspective where i can, when healing i'm using restro staff as well for the +healing passive (Restoration Expert & Restoration Master) and the only targeted heal I've found which is Grand Healing.

This being your first time healing, there's one key thing to note about healing in ESO:

There's no targeting players, heals are either smart-heals (they target the lowest health player in range) or they're AoE. One exception is Grand Healing, which you target the ground and it's AoE, and i guess Blood Altar (undaunted) which requires players to interact with it but can come in handy if you have players that actually pay attention to their health bar ;)

1. The only addon i run is Combat Log Statistics (CLS) an that's just for combat info when i'm curious. If there's others out there that could provide a benefit i'd be open to trying them. I think there's one that shows debuffs, and that' be helpful but I haven't tried it.

2. Not sure there's tanks in the usual sense...just spearheads in the battle. Stay near them as those are the people that will need heals.

3. I think the only targeting is done by pointing your cursor at a player, and even then I think that's only for social interaction purpose...or killing them if they're on another alliance :P

4. I haven't looked for any one yet but have a few tips: Eat magica regen food, have lots of Magicka pots and keeping lots of soul gems to rez people ;)

One other thing, being a templar 3 of our class heals/debuff removal are AoE and centered on us, so as i mentioned in #2, you're going to be better off staying in the fray of the fight...which is nice being a healer.

Question:

What is a soul gem?  How do you get them?  I know when my character dies, it says something about not having a gem, and i can't respawn at that location.

For AvA:

1.  No addons are required to heal.  Healing in ESO is fairly smart, and tries to target the lower health friendly characters nearby.

2.  Due to smart healing and the nature of AvA, you will never need to worry about keeping track of a tank.  In PvE you will know who the tank is in general, but your heals will still target the lowest hp players.  Wise use of your AOE healing will help you avoid misfires healing dps instead of the tank, and can really save the group.

3.  Due to the nature of healing, you don't select a player to heal EVER.  There's no point to something that casts when you click a raid frame nameplate, because the heal is still going to act as it would otherwise... and target the lowest hp friendly/friendlies.

4.  I can put together some pointers.  I will see about making a video or post specifically for this.

Alternate info:  A soul gem is a mystical contraption that holds the soul of something.  You can buy them, find them off bosses and in chests, and sometimes get empty ones you can fill using the world magic spell soul trap.  You can also get a passive that allows you to get back up on location once every 2/1 hours, based on 1/2 skill points spent.  You must target an appropriate level creature to fill an empty gem.

Jairone,

been leveling my Templar healer and have only run a few dungeons so i am a bit ignorant to the more detailed aspects of it.  Will tab selecting the tank cause the single target heal to goto that tank or will it still goto the lowest health player?

perun, healing in this game is smart, their is no actual targetting of players to heal them directly.   When you cast a spell, it either is a smart spell that heals the 1-3 allies nearby, usually the ones who need it the most, or they are aoe's healing every allie within the radius, which is either from you the cast, or if you use Grand healing, the first ability in the restoration bar, within the circle you place on the ground.   Grand Healing is also the only real targetable heal we have.  That is because when you cast it you have to place the circle on the ground, meaning you will want to place it around your tank usually.  This heal heals every ally within that circle, its a brief hot, but it isn't picky.  Also it can be morphed as well to restore magicka back for every ally that was within the circle.    Their is another spell, I think its the 3rd one in the resto staff tree, that is a cone heal, so you have to make sure  you are facing the targets you want to get healed.  This one is also sort of targetable, but if your running around because you got some adds on you, its not as easy to target the correct people, but it basically heals all that are in front of you inside that cone.

In fact, in the game, DPS is a no brainer, most people know what to do.  Healing is way easier than in other games, because of it being a smart heal system.   Tanking is the role that seems to suffer the most in this game, because of the wonky aggro tables.    I find that as is the case in every game, healers have an easy time pulling aggro because of the fact we are healing, since the enemy mobs are smart, they tend to say...hey, that person healed the group, get em'.

Having played a Healer in WoW for six years (Resto Druid, Holy/Disc Priest, Resto Shaman), I can definitely relate to how weird it feels not to be able to target your heals. You can't tab target friendly targets (only enemy players/NPCs) so sometimes it's just hit your heal button when you see people need it and hope it hits the people who need it most. It can be frustrating, but also liberating :)

One thing re Soul Gems in AvA. As everyone is basically auto-levelled to 50, you need to use Grand Soul Gems which are for lvl 50 players. They'll look red to you like you can't use them, even when you're in Cyrodiil, but they will work. They can only be filled by 'real' Level 50s though (so either NPCs or Level 50 enemy players) and cost 121 gold each (though I've heard that when you're actually Level 50 they drop quite a lot). Also, in Cyrodiil you can only use a Soul Gem to rez someone else – you can't use them if you die.

If you're looking for Templar AvA videos to watch, I recommend Erlexx of Ehtropy Rising and Isyldra of The Noore (links go to their Twitch channels, where they archive their videos). Erlexx plays a "mageplar", with Resto/Destro Staves, while Isyldra uses a 1H/Shield and Resto Staff. Also check out Tamriel Foundry for lots of Templar-y goodness! Theres's an entire forum dedicated to Templar Theorycrafting.

Mystborn has a great video about healing and also contributes heaps to the Templar form at TF, as well as here!

I have posted a short guide on the forums for healing.  The tab lock WILL NOT overwrite smart healing.
The guide is only for Resto staff abilities.  If you using the Templar tree please also consider those abilities, and talk with experience Templar healers.
My guide includes a short description of abilities, the morphs, and a when to use them section at the bottom... as well as a short video showing the effects of 4 of the heals.  I do not go into detail in the video, the guide is a read only thing for now.
You can find my staff guide @ http://www.gaiscioch.com/tavern/eso_guides/post_80315.html

It really depends on which sort of fight you're in as to which abilities to use. In our typical Zerg rush through breaches in walls or doors it's handy to lay down a few HoTs on the team (Mutagen is handy here) before the rush, then hit out a few heavy heals when the Zerg hits the defenders. Get AvA rank 4 so you can access Purge from the support skill line and pop that when the enemy begins to DoT and CC the Zerg. Aside from those basic three things, make sure you protect yourself. Templar, Heavy Armor and other trees all have a few handy short duration damage mitigation abilities that can help out. Restoration Staff Heavy Attack is useful for the mana regen effect between casts and the mana block gain passive. Learn when to hold block and when to attack between casts. For some really heavy healing pop the Heavy Armour ability then your healing ultimate in quick succession while in the middle of the fight. You may even live til the end of the cast. :p

Enjoy!
