Been nearly 15 months since anything was posted in here, and since there's a new group going on, I figure (with the insistance of one of the players) that I would get this active again so Fog wouldn't have wasted his time adding this in back in 2013.

So, to start it off, Thror Thunderfist asked if anyone played tabletop RPGs ( http://gaiscioch.com/tavern/gaiscioch_discussion/post_93803.html ), which brought back memories of another post at the end of 2012 ( http://gaiscioch.com/tavern/gaiscioch_discussion/post_47764.html ). So, I tossed my name in this one as well, only instead of a player, I offered up to be the DM with the system being the fairly newly released 5th edition of D&D. After a rocky beginning, not knowing if I would get the number of players I felt was needed, a person having to drop, and postponing the game a week or two, we got our first session done back on April 1st, 2015.

The characters:

Thror Thunderfist (played by Thror Thunderfist), a dwarven paladin.

Rethan Telvanni (played by Pyrrhic), a half-elven warlock.

Temar Gundrick (played by Jairone), an air aasimar rogue.

Xewyn (played by Radiologikal), a longstride shifter ranger.

Thia Nailo (played by Briseadh), a wood elf cleric. [Newest addition, hasn't played yet]

The characters were sent to Easting, a village in the Cormyr region of the Forgotten Realms, to investigate rumors of a terrible plague that can turn its victims into demons. Upon arrival, they met Sir Arveen, the only combat-capable person in the village, along with her squire Hendar, and Father Evendur, the priest (cleric) of the village. They were arguing about what to do with those infected with the plague (Arveen wanted to kill them all in the name of protecting the town [she was also infected], while Evendur wanted to cure them). Arveen brought the PCs to the barn next to the Thirsty Ox Inn, where all the infected people were being housed, with the intent of letting the PCs inspect the sick. Upon entering the barn, they were attacked by a few of the plague demons.

The fight was a brutal one, with Thror being badly injured (after a few of the demons broke their teeth upon his shield), and poor Temar taking a nasty bite that brought him to the doorsteps of death. Temar managed to pull through in the end, after all the demons were slain. The party captured a rather insane dwarf who had been trying to skulk through the shadows. They found out his name (Jakairn Sabrak), and also found the origins of the plague. They patched themselves up, found the missing component for the Cure Disease ritual that Evendur was wanting to cast, and prepared to continue their journey to eradicate the plague.

What will happen next?

I'm looking forward to getting in there tonight with my character.  We have quite the crazy little crew and it will be interesting to see how the characters really react to each other as we get further along.

The adventure continues in session 2, or "How I nearly killed everyone"

So, things start off with the PCs being "asked" (more like ordered) by Arveen to try and take out the source of the plague. Thia Nailo (Briseadh's character) shows up and gets shipped off with the others to take out the plague. They make their way south along the river, to which they came upon a shallow ford in the river, where they are confronted by more insane dwarves.

At the start, Thia and Xewyn (Radiologikal's character) put arrows into the acolyte's body (Thia provided the killing blow, with her arrow puncturing his forehead and lodging in there pretty tight) before he could do a thing. This was after 2 earth elementals (lesser versions, or so I thought) rose from the ground to try and protect the dwarves. Thror (can you guess who's character that is? :p ) goes up to the closest elemental and tries to smash it with his hammer, while Temar (Jairone's character) stabs it with his shortsword. Much to their dismay, their weapons weren't accomplishing the task of killing it very well. Thror got taken out, as did Temar, and with the help of Thia, came back into the fight. But that was not to last long, as after Thror tried to hurt the elemental even more by hammering one of Xewyn's arrows into it, the elemental's fist turned to iron and with a well connected slam, knocked Thror to the ground like Mike Tyson. Meanwhile, Xewyn takes out most of the dwarven warriors (minions with 2 hp), while Rethan (Pyrrhic's character) helped try to take out the elemental. At one point, the second elemental, having failed at the task of protecting the dwarves, gives up and leaves (because just 1 of these things was proving to be a bit much for level 1 characters). They managed to survive and take out the elemental.

They followed the dwarves' trail through the badlands, got some advice and forewarning from a galeb dhur, and then came upon a camp of 2 drow (who had 2 spiders in hiding). Rethan managed to take out the male with Tasha's Hideous Laughter, but alas it lasted only a single round as he managed to shake it off. The female drow was nearly taken out as quick as that poor acolyte, but she was able to survive a bit on low hp before finally dying. The spiders proved to be deadly, as did the male drow. Thror, Temar, and Thia were all taken down, and with the quick thinking of Xewyn and Rethan, were saved by the use of healing potions they had gotten for ridding the village of the plague demons. Poor Thia was nearly killed by a well placed crit (and would have been outright killed, which I felt would be terrible since Bri just made that character, so I had the drow pull his "punches" so he could try to take prisoners). But they managed to survive and kill the spiders, while taking the male drow as their own prisoner.

I am finding that the design of 4th edition is even more of a departure from that of 5th edition. The dwarf encounter was reduced compared to what was written, though I left the drow encounter to be similar to that which was written, though the HP was greatly reduced (the female drow was to have 90+ hp, but I reduced that to only about 22. She was a 4th edition "elite", though I used the lowest drow statistics from the Monster Manual with a change of weapon for her). The male had 17.

Good news, though. They managed to level up to 2. Hopefully I will have a bit more time this week to tweak the further combat encounters to where 2+ characters aren't on the ground at 0 hp making me some death saves. Though with Baef joining up and hopefully playing with us for session #3, I may not have to do too much.

Corrections:  That first fight I never went down (Thia healed me prior to that.)  I attacked a dwarf crossbow user prior to the elemental.

Additions:  Prior to leaving, we insulted Arveen for being useless, mocked her intelligence, called her lazy, and even managed to get the local elder to jump in so she wouldn't get any more verbal abuse...  (She deserved it.)

Oh yeah. You are correct about your correction. Thror was the only one to fall in that battle. The elemental tried to take you out 2x I think, but you dodged both hits.

I guess I really should do these summaries once we are done, so everything is still in my brain. I didn't mean to short-change anybody. I probably short-changed Pyrrhic in there as well. I think it was him who finally took out the elemental with his Eldritch Blast.

Correction: It was the great Rethan who jumped in to help defend the Lady Arveen's virtue of abstaining from battle. Clearly the details have become mottled.

YES it was Rethan who took out the Elemental with his beams of crackling energy!!!!

Clearly a true accounting must be given...

To alleviate any discrepancies from future recountings, starting with session 3, I shall be recording the raidcall conversations so I can relisten to them to provide accurate information. This will definitely help me with my memory, especially after spending the day working directly after our D&D game, which doesn't help in keeping info about what happened.

Hope no one minds me doing this.

Great Deeds of a Great Man: The True Tales of Rethan
Author: Rethan
Editor: Rethan
Publisher: Rethan Publishing House

Preface

Behold all you who read upon these words. I will confound those who would have altered my words. I will not suffer that they shall destroy my work. I will display unto them that my wisdom is greater than the cunning of the gods. Therefore, take heed of this accounting for all who wish to hear the true tales of Rethan’s adventuring days.

Entry #4-c

It was noon-day and the sun was shining brightly. Lady Arveen (A woman of great import within the city of Easting) congratulated Rethan’s Adventuring Group LLC. for another job well done. Dispatching demons and a vagrant dwarf is no easy work. Sadly, Xewyn (the groups savage) was quite obtuse  with Lady Arveen, accusing her of not being cooperative in our greatest hour of need. A blasted savage was demanding answers from a lady; truly this world has plunged into darkness. Luckily Rethan stepped in to defuse the situation. We informed Lady Arveen of the source of the blight of demons. We assured her that she can rest at ease, Rethan is on the case. Speaking of rest, it dawned upon Rethan as he examined his followers that they might need several hours of rest. Being the kind and gentle hearted man that he is, Rethan urged them for a long rest and obliged them to a night stay at the local Inn.  No surprise was given when yet another person – an elf named Thia – wished to accompany Rethan and his group.

With our findings laid bare before Lady Arveen, it fell upon Rethan and his cohorts to march to perilous lengths to save Easting and possibly all of Faerûn.

Entry #5-b

After hours of trudging through the untamed wilderness, a horde of ill-begotten dwarves befell Rethan’s Adventuring Group LLC.  The sky was especially dark that day. The vagabond dwarves had the aid of several earth elemental creatures. To see the fear fill up in Xewyn’s (the groups savage) eyes would bring any man to run (Of course Xewyn is no man and by any rights, leading me to believe he is lacking in any basic emotional and moral senses). The earthen creatures were crashing their fists against Thror’s (the groups gibbering drunk) shield. Arrows were zipping and hissing through the air. Swords were ringing against each other. Those sinister dwarves fell like the trees of Tethyr. As always, Rethan hit his marks at every turn, crackling beams of energy were let loose, tearing asunder his foes with great blasts of energy! It was truly a sight to behold. How fortunate are those who witness it. With one final blast from Rethan, one of the living earth creatures crumbled before everyone’s eyes. At this sight the remaining earthen creatures fled in fear of sharing the same fate. A pungent smell of death hung over the battlefield that day. Another victory was granted upon Rethan and his companions.

That was a pretty awesome recounting, from the viewpoint of Rethan. And I look forward to seeing how gaining level 2 will affect everyone. Especially getting to level 3, when many classes get their subclass/archetype/path unlocked.

ROFL at Rethan's recount.  Here is something from Thia's point of view.

--------------------------------------

Every now and then you find something entertaining to join up with for the fun of it while wandering the world.  Eastling ended up being one of the places this happened for me.  I met four males that probably should have never wound up adventuring together other than some job they all went for at the same time.  Actually they were intrumental in dispatching some people or things dispatching a plague in Eastling.  They were getting paid for this endeavor in a meeting with the town leaders when I just walked on up.

So here I am traveling with a shiftling rogue or something of the sort named Tremar.  Another wanderer, Xewyn, who figured he had to sniff me to check me out so I sniffed him back.  Thankfully he didn't smell bad.  He seems to have huge issues with Rethan, but who wouldn't.  One, Rethan, is a half-elf.  Two, he is an arrogant noble and I'm going to claim that has to be his human side.  Finally, there is the pretty standard dwarf, Thror, with the full armor, hammer and a shield along with ale on hand.  Only thing this crew didn't have before I showed up was a cleric and boy did they need me in the next adventures.

First, was the five dwarves and two stone beasts.  Take it from me, stone vs greatclub, stone wins every time.  Only one hint told me that, but the attempt allowed me to disengage successfully from one stone beast.  I guess he was made I shot the dwarf mage in the eye with my short bow.  Shot that one so well I could not get my arrow out.  No casting for you!  In the end I used both cure wounds I had for the day plus cantrips, one to stabilize a fallen comrade and one to see if I could hurt stone with it.  It didn't do much, but a few chips of stone fell off.  Rethan decided to take all the glory only because he was the last to hit the remaining stone beast.  Like he was doing a whole lot of damage.  I think his spells worked about as good as my cantrip did though definitely better than a big stick!  Mind you I only need one attempt to know not to us the greatclub again.

Then there is the cocky attempt at taking out two drow, forgetting to see what else might be hiding.  Turns out the spiders are what nearly killed us.  Thankfully this crew each had a healing potion on them.  A smart move seeing as they did not have a cleric before I showed up.  Even if I did go down and had to have a healing potion dumped down my throat by a sneaky Xewyn, if I hadn't been healing and doing what I do best, it would have been far worse!  I will give Tremar the credit for winning this one by elevating one of the drow out of combat.  Again, before I needed to go to healing mode I did do some accurate shooting with my bow into the female drow, who died first in our attack.

Anyway, this should continue to be interesting for awhile.  I am waiting to see who gives up bothering each other first, Rethan or Xewyn.  They seem to have a thing for each other.  If words could hurt, they would both be dead.  Then again maybe they just need to be locked in the same room for a couple days with no contact with anyone else and a puzzle that takes two to get out.  Hmm, would be fun to try that, but I would get bored waiting for them to figure out how to get out.  This is far more entertaining for the moment.

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D

From Temar's viewpoint:

Oh, it's morning!  I wonder what I can find that is interesting.  I bet there's a lot of nifty stuff outside!  *Temar rushes outside, still finishing getting his armor on as he moves.*
Hey!  There is a nice bird in that tree.  I wonder what the bird is going to do.  *Temar stares at the bird for a while, until he hears voices he knows.*
Ok, well, there's the useless woman who was supposed to be some hero...  'Hi useless woman!  Are you going to be useful today?'  Huh, she's being stupid again.  'So, you aren't going to be useful?'  Nope.  'Ok, you aren't going to be useful again, can I at least suggest something so that you aren't stupid?'  Nope, she's offended.  Temar does not care.  'Don't be stupid.'
Thankfully, the old man is not so stupid.  He agrees that sending a letter about what is going on would be smart, and Temar knows that the worst case is avoided.  He leaves the stupid woman alone, for now.
Oh, hey, they have some new person to meet!  An elf cleric.  She's short.  She has a big stick.  I hope she likes birds.

A little later:
Wait, the rocks are moving?  Oh, hey, there are some dwarves.  Hi dwarves!  What's that, you want to kill us?  Die!!  *Spurts of blood as he nearly beheads a dwarf after leaping down off the bank of the stream they are at.*  Ouch!  Stop shooting me!  Well, arrows to face are what you get, I guess I should try to get that rock guy... he seems tough.  Chip chip chip, but it just isn't doing enough!  What, taunt me.  Stupid rock.  Stupid stupid rock!  Okay, rock is down.  Too bad I can't break it more.  I should gather up the dwarves for our dwarf, he was sad he couldn't kill them, so maybe this will cheer him up!  'Shut up Rethan.  You barely did anything, it was almost broken when you managed to use your magic to do something on the level of a really hard pinch on it.  Excessive arrogance shall now be called Rethan, no matter who is doing it.'
'Thanks for the healing Thia!  It was nice!'
Uh, better watch the Rethan.  Temar keeps an eye on the loot so it doesn't get unfairly taken.

A little later:  Why are we killing these drow?  Oh well, I guess Thia and Thror make enough noise we would never sneak past them anyway.  I'll hide here first, and... Spider?  Where did that come from.  Stab!  Nope... well, evil drow woman must die.
Ouch!  What bit me.  I feel funny.  Uhhhh.
Uhhhh.
Uhhhh.
Oh, hey, Rethan used a healing potion on me?  Well, I guess he isn't all that bad... stupid, self-centered, arrogant, and Rethany, but not bad.  I'll help kill this spider!  Yay, I killed it.  Somebody mentioned Bilbo.  What's a Bilbo.  Is this a good thing?
Oh, stupid male drow is still fighting.  Up you go!  You want to surrender, you say.  'Fine, drop your weapons.'  Ok, upside down you come down!  I wonder what a stupid male drow is like as a pet...

From Thror's Viewpoint: first Draft lol might need to make some changes

ahhh there be nothing like a quest to get ones blood pumping.  Though the beginning of our quest was rocky we crushed the demonspawn and found the source of the plague.  I will not rest Until those soon to be beardless dwarves are hunted down.  I am disappointed that my dwarven strength failed me when attacking the stone golem.  Also that I didnt get to fell one of the honorless exuses for dwarves.  Though It was satisfying to take their beards (I'm thinking of using the beards to make something)  I

Thror finds his companions very interesting to say the least.  He thinks the that the bickering between Xewyn and Rethan to be hilarious.  He likes Temars optimism and energy and loves that thea carries a great club and that she enjoys smashing things :).

He always trys to share his good fortune and his ale ;).  He enjoys sharing a good tale around the fire, whilst drinking some ale.

For the honor of all dwarves and clan Thunderfist.  Praise be to Nuada.  Thror loves to engage powerful foes with a smile on his face and a fierce battle cry.  He feels the need to do great heroic deeds.

Starts singing a Dwarven drinking song with his flask in hand.

from 4-15-15

well Thror, is a young dwarf(40 years prospectively) and doesn't have very much experience with relationships(or drow females for that matter).  At the beginning of this session of the adventure he started flirting with the drow female.  He tried to act the part of a gentleman and offer her some of the cooked spider that xewyn had just cooked for our meal.  Despite the obvious snickers and jokes about him being a dirty old dwarf, he persisted until later he realized that he had made a fool of himself.  (His personality makes him susceptible to carnal pleasures)

Later that day they thror and the group encountered a large group of elementals, thanks to thia thror was able to draw away some of the attacks.  Until(ironically) an air elemental decided to stalk him wherever he went.  All the while he is cussing at the elementals with dwarven swear words.  After the elementals were destroyed, thror acting his impulsive self trips a trap at the entrance to the evil dwarves lair, luckily we all survived.

I got the session recorded, and will be listening to it tomorrow to write up an accurate retelling of the session.

The PCs did trounce my elementals today, after having a tough time of it last week. Made me a little sad. I wonder if that will continue into the next week's session.

I recorded last week's session, and still have not listened to it. I will do so tomorrow (I am off from work) and then will post a recap.

The characters have cleared out the entrance to the dungeon, known as the Sunset Shrine. They are nearly at their adventure's end. Will they end the plague and stop the mad Sabrak brothers, or will they be just another set of victims, the next recruits of the plague demon army? Find out soon...ish

Ok, after attempting to listen to the recording of last week's session, I just couldn't. The sound of my voice...

So, with attempts of recollecting week-old memory, I will give a short recap.

The session started with our adventuring party questioning their drow captive, which turned out to be 2 as the female they thought they killed wasn't as dead as they figured. For most of the questioning, Rethan talked to the male drow, getting information about the dwarves and the temple. All the while, Xewyn has decided to cook one of the dead spiders in front of the drow, along with tossing some of it at the drow's feet. The drow wasn't too happy with this (spiders are to them what cows are to those of the Hindu faith), but he continued to answer the questions, averting his gaze and ignoring the sacrilege.

With their new information, they set about on their way to the Sunset Shrine, which is a hole in the ground surrounded by rocky pillars that resemble teeth. As they made their way toward the entrance, they were accosted by mudmen (thanks to Xewyn poking a pool of mud). There were 3 total, and they were joined by a dust devil, and not long after, a lesser air elemental. One mudman was dispatched fairly easily. The dust devil seemed to pose a bit more of a threat, but was taken out without much fuss. Thia was taken aback when one of the mudmen launched itself at her. It killed itself, but in doing so covered her in mud that made it impossible to move as well as breathe. The 3rd mudman tried to do the same to Temar, but his reflexes were too quick, and the mudman missed twice.

Meanwhile, our dwarven paladin Thror was being tossed around, quite literally, by the air elemental. Rethan tried many times to blast both beings of swirling wind (dust devil and air elemental), but his attacks went wide for the most part. He was able to take out the dust devil, and I believe a mudman.

Once these elementals were dispatched, they attempted to enter the temple, but were slow to remembering that a passphrase was needed to bypass the trap. Thror set it off with his hammer, and everyone but Xewyn (or was it Rethan? Again, week-old memory) got blasted by the thunder glyph trap. Luckily, no one was seriously injured, and Thia said the passphrase, deactivating the trap.

Tomorrow, they make their way inside the Shrine. What horrors await them? Will they trounce through like they did just outside, or will they be trounced like they almost were against the drow. Find out sooner than before.

The party gained a new member, a gnomish sorcerer named Leonard Bojangles (played by a friend of Pyrrhic's), who has helped out quite a bit. They stormed the Sunset Shrine, the place where the Sabrak clan were trying to bring the being known as the Elder Elemental Eye back to Faerun. They rather easily mopped up the main foe's brother, Azryg, and his lackeys. They rescued a prisoned (now insane) hermit from the dungeon area, slaughtered the dwarves trying to protect the altar room, and then made rather quick and easy work of the Amorphous One, an azure jelly who was the miniboss. They entered the staircase that led deeper into the Shrine, where they came across a few more plague demons and 2 black elementals with fiery fists. Those didn't last long, and they were off to kill the main foe, Zarnak. He proved to be tougher, nearly taking out a few of the party. Thanks to their healing potions, none died. They made their way back to Easting, where they gave the town guard some "new" armor and weapons procured from the fallen dwarves.

After Easting, they made their way back to Iriaebor, where they were rewarded.

Thus ends the introduction to the adventure.

Thror upon leveling up has increased his charisma by 2 points, thus becoming much more attractive(or so he hopes mwuahahaha).  Watch out ladies hehehe.  He hopefully is becoming a more effective paladin.

Oh no!  We are in trouble.  However, this female wood elf, already knowing the dwarf if falling over his own tongue and feet with any female, has 2 more points in wisdom, so is even wiser in knowing what the poor dwarf is attempting to do.   ;)

It's a really fun crew and pretty much the right size for our setup at the moment.  There are some awesome character dynamics and roleplay going on now that we've truly gotten into the flow of things.  The crew is pretty much Giascioch or really close friends of Gaiscioch, so the family values are there making this all the better.  It's proper, respectful players who know how to RP, not so respectful character's to the point as players we are usually laughing a lot.  =)

I didn't do a good job on note taking to really write up a cool thing for you all to ready from Thia's point of view.  However, some other points to be noted of the fun.

On the last battle with Karnak, Thia decided to play with her recently acquired Spiritual Weapon and knock the evil dwarf around a bit.  At least half of the time the thing managed to hit.  Temar's illusion of a second one was visible, but obviously a fake that Karnak pretty much ignored it.

Rethan - this poor noble got blood splattered and smacked about like a rag doll in this fight.  He got two healing potions in the mix of things, one "marked" by Xewyn.  Thia thinks boys will be boys the way these two mess with each other.  At least Rethan was kind enough to thank people for the potions regardless.

Xewyn - the one that probably did the most damage to Karnak with his mighty bow skills.

Leonard - the gnome was the only one that could be fully covered by a three foot high font of water in the center of the room.  However, this made the poor fellow have to move for line of sight for no detrement of hitting the evil Karnak.  In the end the poor party gnome found several of his spells just didn't cut it going against Karnak, but he gave it his best mighty, party gnome attempt.

Thror - properly smashed some of the lackies and then helped finish off Karnak with a mighty charge.  (Do not mention it really took two charges due to the distance, but he got there and that is the point!)

Temar - was his usual backstabbing self on the lackies, pulled off a good illusion that unfortunately fooled no one, and was healed in the end by Thia.

And there sums up more of the taking out of Karnak.

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D

Hi Engwar.  It's actually gone 4 weeks and I missed the first week.  We are level 4 and week after next we jump into another campaign since we got the intro done.  There are currently 6 players and the DM.

Not sure what Oreo's comfort level is with group sizes, I think we are around that point now.  However, don't hurt to ask since he has done Pathfinder with ya and know how you roll.  =)
