Also please note that in raid scenario's if your not the raid leader you may not get to play the spec you want. If your new to a raid don't expect to be Main Tank not knowing the boss fights unless its a progression raid.
Some Raid leaders will go with people they know to Main tank a raid or ask someone in the raid or ask for a Tank specifically. Same goes for Main tank healer or Archon to use reflective command etc.
It is up to the raid leader to determine who does what for the raid. Asking the raid leader for the ability to fill a specific Role when they are not familiar with you may or may not get you anyplace.
Proper Communication is the Key. Talk to the Raid leader preferably off Raid express your interest in performing a specific task in the next raid.
Example: Alton my Warrior is geared 220 Toughness 330ish Hit with 17K hps but is relatively new to the role but the raid leaders know me on 3 other toons and know how I play. I ask my desire to roll on Tank Gear Mainspec no one has a problem with it. Worst they can say is no. I also ask if I could tank some things inside. I was given the task of Offtank and even tanked Some of the Bosses.
So basically. Talk to the Raid leaders express your interest in certain roles. Learn the Mechanics even if you learn them as a Dps over being a healer or a Dps over a tank or even a Bard until you get suitable Dps gear.
