Help understanding a ping test

As I mentioned in another post I am moving out into the sticks and I am doing so research on the best internet connection I will be able to get.  A few of my neighbors are using satellite and it sounds like the latency is way to high.  A few are using Roadstar which is point to point relay system using cell towers.  One of them did a ping test for me but I have no idea if the results are bad, ok, good or great.  Storms do slow the connection down a little and there was a storm while he did this test.  Can someone tell me what you think?

As a comparison I pinged the same 4.2.2.2 IP address from my DSL (mind you I'm in the sticks at the end of what I call the red headed step child line of our phone company)

Round trip times were - 42ms min, 48ms avg, and 58ms max

I see quite a few pings in that range and even faster on his list.  Of course, you can see what happens when the storm intensifies.  He had a HUGE min/max range but the good thing is he still had an average of 112ms so the big blips might cause hiccups, but didn't seem to mess things up too badly.  So it looks good and you might even have less latency than I have on my DSL on a good day.  Glad he did his test during a storm so you can see how it randomly makes latency bounce up rather high, but at least it appears to be the norm to only slow down slightly overall in a storm.  Might want him to do it on a good day just for a stare and compare of how smooth it can be because it does have to storm heavy to mess it up enough to make it slow down and torrential to kill it.

You might get kicked now and then from a game during a major storm, but otherwise I think it will be all right.

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D

That in my opinion doesn't look very good.  The reason why I say that is the wide variation ms in your test. I see a number of spikes above 150. However don't lose heart.  It really will depend on what you play. With that sort of spiky connection you could still probably pull off a fantasy type mmo, you're just going to have some lag spikes in there. As long as you perhaps explain up front to your group that you get lag at times so please understand, I think you'll find most fantasy type mmo players will indeed understand. However I think you might get pretty frustrated in a first person shooter type game. It can get pretty competitive and lag spikes like that will most often get you killed and can be beyond frustrating if you're trying to snipe.

To give you some averages to go by that might help in your shopping around. These are considered in most circles the averages you tend to get with different "types" of isp's.

Dial up = usually averages around 400 ms ping, yet back when I had dial up I had an amazing provider that gave me 156 ms but that's almost unheard of.

DSL = 75=125 ms on average. Yet many  people can some times get average game pings around 50ms some times even lower.

Road Runner Turbo = for me mine stays at 21 ms in almost every game I play. It's expensive in comparison to my last dsl provider but I have to admit it's amazing speed and reliability. At least in my area.

If I was in your shoes and was out shopping around I would try to aim for at least a 75-150 ms ping.  Some thing to keep in mind as well is if you plan on playing a certain game most of the time. For instance if you mainly play GW2 you could possibly do a ping test for it. Go in game on GW2 and in chat type /ip and it will give you an ip address.  Hope this helps in some way and good luck.

@OldManJenkins - remember that ping test was during a definite storm

I told him to get one when it is nice out too for comparison.  I think unless it is raining bad, he is gonna be okay.

@Brisseadh - oops didn't take notice of that. Sorry about that. On the other hand it gives him "worst case scenario" look at that connection. Which in my opinion is still playable just going to get some lag spikes and or disconnects for a mmorpg type game and almost unplayable for a first person shooter. I hope it works out for him. I did get to thinking about some of those pings after I made my post.  I can see around 5 of those pings being possibly long enough to log him out of game. Meaning the game server will view the rapid loss in packet transfer time as a disconnect and auto log him out.  But if that's during a storm and it is timing him out then may just have to wait till the storm passes.

Yes This would be for MMO's.  Thanks both of you for your respones.  Unfortunelty where I am moving there aren't many choices to shop around.  This service which I posted about, satellite, or a 4G service (Verizon Fusion.)  The Fusion is a great option and very fast, but also the priciest and like satellite caped at around 30G per month for there most expensive package ($120/month).  Which could be a lot.  We average around 40-50 gig a month now, but my son streams way to much netflix and that chews up the gigs.  I am very excited about moving but scared to think it could be the end of my gaming, right on eve of a great game like Final Fantasy...

You'll get it worked out.  The kid dont need to watch that much tv/movie stuff anyway.  ;)  Hand him a book.  LOL!  Tell him to go play outside.

Well actually you might have found upon your answer and didn't quite notice it. Perhaps if your family used the 4G for gaming only and then used Roadstar for the rest like streaming video and music?
