low FPS in mmo's

Hi all - i need some help.  I'm having a problem (and a lot of confusion), with getting my pc up to speed for Guild Wars 2, especially with the WvW portion. The problem i'm running into is i seem to be getting a huge amount of lag and system slowness whenever i'm in an area with more than 5 people. I'm running a system that meets minimum specs for the game, and i'm pretty sure that it would be considered a mid-range PC.  I've run Fraps during the last 4-hr stress test, and gotten results of an avg of 15-21 fps in pve areas with no other players around, but it drops during dynamic events. in wvw, i drop to about 5-10, if i'm lucky. After getting these results, i re-ran the same test in the other mmo's i play, namely guild wars, and star trek online, (i'm waiting for TOR to go F2P).

I could really use some help with this. I have run fraps, belac advisor, and hijack this to diag my system, and i use game booster before launching the game, but i'm frankly at a loss for why fps's are so low, and the system seems to lag.

My basic pc setup is this:

2.30 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core
256 kilobyte primary memory cache
1024 kilobyte secondary memory cache
64-bit ready
Multi-core (2 total)
Not hyper-threaded

Windows 7 Ultimate (build 7600)

Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller
NVIDIA GeForce GT 430 [Display adapter]
AOC F22 [Monitor]

cpu: 25degrees c (77degrees f)
Mainboard: 51degrees c (126degrees f)
videocard: 57degrees c (133degrees f)
harddisk: 43degrees c (109degrees f)
fan speed: 2836rpm

memory usage during play
gw2 -890228 (969844)
vent -15860
fraps-23524
notepad-1416
gamebooster
lcdsirereal-7228
logitech setpoint-9856

I tend to run with 1-2 windows open in firefox 8, to keep the beta forum avaialbe, along with vent and notepad. I have detailed log files from belarc and hijack this that i can post if it would help. Right now i can't afford to buy or build a new pc, so i'm asking for any help i can get to bring this system up to speed.

any help or response, is greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Grendell.

NVidia should be coming out with new video card drivers (hopefully soon) to enchance performance of GW2. The NVidia cards are not running the game as well as they should. Unless I missed it, I did not see how much RAM you have on the motherboard? More memory can let you do less caching back and forth to the hard drive. I would reccommend 8 gig at least with Micro$loth Windoze 7. Also, your hard drive speed and condition can matter, since the game is loading the world objects into memory as you move through it, there is a lot of drive access. A defrag may help. Have you played with the games graphic settings under the game options? There is a slider and other things that you can adjust for best performance versus seeing more graphic detail. The default settings may be set too high for your system specs. Once we get in the game it will be easier to trouble shoot, I would be happy to help over vent if I can.

The new video drivers and adjusting your in game video settings is likely to help the most. However, filling slots A0 and A1 with 2 gig sticks of RAM would help your overall computer performance.

Just checked on Nvidia.com for you and see that the most recent driver is 301.42 released on 5/22/2012. I know they do plan on releasing updates here soon, but make sure your driver is this one until they come out with the next. Also, Windows 7 is a pig on any computer (Windows has always been a memory pig), so that isn't helping either if your RAM is really only in the MB and not the GB. Posted this and saw your reply so here is my edit to memory - you have 4GB of RAM and I would do the 2GB in each of the empty slots as suggested

Interesting. A google search is showing the motherboard you have can use 4 gigs max, but you are running 4 gig with 2 slots free. I need to do some more research.

Oh, that might not help then if it is maxed. Hope you figure this out Taibhse. In the process of figuring out the right driver for Grendell, I see my NEW card did not come with this year's update. It has last year's. Go figure. =D Still would like to know the actual RAM on your video card, Grendell. Can't do anything about it at this time, but would be nice to know for the setup. =)

So far everything I can find is indicating that motherboard can only use 4 gigs of RAM. I find it strange though that there are also documents saying that you can only have 1 gig per memory slot, which is obviously not true if you have 2 gig sticks. At this point I would hate to reccommend you buy RAM when it would likely not work because of the 4 gig max limitations. There is an NVidia beta driver (304.79) out there that apparently improves performance in GW2. The login warning message about outdated drivers was reccommending it. However, I would wait until the "certified" version comes out. The cost effective upgrade options for your system are limited. A faster graphics card would just bottleneck at the CPU and memory limitations. New video driver when available and lowering games graphics settings are your best bet as far as I can tell. There are some non-essential services and eye candy graphics that can be turned off in Windows that may help a little. We can look at that once we are all on voice if you like.

thanks for all the help, the ram on my video card is 1gb, my mb is maxed with 2 2gig sticks of ram. although this problem appears in other mmo's i play, it is really a problem with gw2, also, i tried to update to the beta driver, but not only does nvida's website refuse to read my system (windows tells me the certificate is from an unknown source), but when i tried to install manually, the install fails. this makes me wonder if the problem is not software or registry related. i'm not sure if 15-20 fps is good for an mmo, but that seems to be my avg when playing. again, thanks for the help. ps: can anyone offer system parts/specs for a system that would excel at wvw/pvp in crowded settings while giving exceptional grapgics? - basically, i want to run a system that plays the way videos do when in WvW. Max graphics are not needed but mid to high are a must.

Lets wait until we are in the game and all set up on our game server and first characters. Then we can play with graphic drivers and such. We do not want to break anything this close to release! Just saw your P.S. Best bet is to set a budget first. You can spend anywhere from $1000 to $5000 on a new system, depending on how fast you want to go. How much do you want to spend? It is much easier to build around a max price.

Thanks again for all the help. I'm still trying to figure a working budget for my new "gaming rig", but may not be able to get one until after the holidays with everything in life taking a turn right now. :( on the bright side, i should be able to play gw2, if only pve to start and then move to wvw after the holidays, (and i've hopefully learned a class or two). :) i'll revisit this topic after official launch, probably the weekend following, as i plan to be busy. see you all in game - only 1 day 4hrs 15mins to go.. 14.....13.....

64 bit ready... but your useable memory is only 3gb. Are you using a 32 or 64 bit os? Memory on a Vid card is important, but the memory interface is where the real power is. Is your card a 64/128/192/256 bit interface? Dual Core may not run this as well as a 4/6/8 Even if you have the most whiptastic Vid Card - youre bottlenecked at the CPU level. Download and run 3D Mark06 from www.futuremark.com and run it. See what your score is, and then google the results for comparable systems Download and install Gamebooster - to shut off processes (seen and hidden) that are wasting computing power. I have 2 Comparable systems both being dual core, 1 amd and 1 intel, 4GB Ram etc. If you would like to compare numbers/tweaks/etc My Setup (as I build it now in anticipation of launch) will be: ASUS P8Z77-Vpro Intel Core i5 2500k @3.4ghz (Quad Core) 16GB RAM 120GB SSD 1.5TB SATA Nvidia GTX 560ti Win7 Ultimate 64bit Air Cooled Raven 3 Case Currently I use: Asus Motherboard (I forget the numbers) AMD Phenom II x4 955 @3.20ghz 8GB Ram 500GB SATA Nvidia GTX 560ti Win7 Ultimate 64bit Water Cooled Antec 300 Case My Current setup runs rift at a smooth rate with tweaked ultra settings lowered the AA and a few other things. I did not get the chance to try GW with this system. If you want help putting together a computer parts list, I would be happy to help. Would just need to have an approx price pt to work with.
