101 Things to do with Ramen?

I thought it might be fun to see what tricks others have come up with to "dress up" that humble package of Ramen Noodle Soup.  This one was shared with me from a university student in Portugal living on a budget.

1 package of Ramen Noodle Soup (any flavor)

1/2 kielbasa cut into 1/2 inch slices (OMG, another sausage recipe from Betony).  Again, I'm not a big meat eater so a half ring of kielbasa, which is about 6.5 ounces, is plenty meat for this dish.

1-2 tablespoons of canola or vegetable oil

1 egg, beaten

Prepare a package on Ramen Noodle soup as per the package instructions.  Brown the sausage and add to the soup pot.  When the soup liquid is very hot; add the beaten egg and swirl with a spoon.

Well, I make homemade style noodles if I possibly can, but I suppose some of the recipes/tips might work nicely.

For a basic flavor up, add a little cumin, paprika, marjoram, basil, salt, and cayenne if you so desire.  This gives you a nice balance of flavors, which will work with almost any meat based soup (I use these to make canned soups edible, when canned soup is the only option!)

For something a little more jazzy, try adding small chunks of apple, mango, and pear to it.  Give the harder items a little longer to sit (maybe even to the point of adding before the hot water.)  I do this as a soup, with a salt brine broth flavored with just a little lemon, orange juice, and oregano... and it always seems popular.  The biggest key is to keep the fruits from becoming total mush, and I'm not sure how well you can time that with store bought ramen.

Another possibility is to consider taking two eggs, making them sunny side or medium, and serving the ramen on top of them with some cheese(s) and/or meats of your choice.  I usually do this with homemade egg noodle ramen and with ham.

Hope these give you some ideas!

Those are some great ideas Jairone!  Never thought about adding fruit but am thinking that this would make an ordinary dish very extraordinary.  I definitely will have to try this sweet and savory combination!  And as a confirmed egg-o-holic the fried egg version won't take much coaxing.  LOL

The only thing I won't commit to is the homemade noodle part.   Homemade noodles!  That would definitely take this dish to the top of the charts!  I like the idea very much  . .. but there are so much evil to contain in Tamriel!

You sound like a very accomplished cook Jairone.  Perhaps you have some other delights to share with us.  :)

TY Betony.

Actually, I shared my doughnuts recipe recently, and am about to share an original creation now that I have pictures.  I grew up cooking since ~ 1st or 2nd grade, and am always looking to grow more skilled in the art of food preparation!

I ate WAY too many ramen noodles when I was a poor college student. I can't stand the things anymore. Here is my top ten list of things to do with the things (humor mode on)

1. Burn them and see what color they make (note: only do this outside in an approved container, following all applicable local, state, and federal laws)

2. Cook them up and use them for pretend brains at Halloween

3. Pretend they're your boss' head and stomp on them when you're mad. Do this outside so that the mess can be eaten by pigeons or gulls, who can survive anything.

4. Crush them and use them for confetti.

5. Crush them and throw them at the ex-friend's wedding. You don't wish fertility on them.

6. Crush them and put them in your roommate's rice krispies to see if he notices the taste difference. Do this during finals week when he's less likely to notice.

7. Glue chunks or bits to poster board. Attempt to sell to art galleries claiming it's 'modern art'. When they refuse, leave it at their back door in the rain.

8. Crush into bits. Spray paint with gold paint. Place in a glass dish purchased from Good Will. Claim it was an idea you got out of a Martha Stewart magazine and watch people rave over the idea.

9. Test permeability of noodles to different chemicals, e.g. acid, alkalines, alcohols, kerosene, water. Use only approved containers and ollow all applicable local, state, and federal laws while conducting experiments.

10. Use bricks to make a snow fort in the winter time. Or use them as substitute snowballs if you run out of snow. Wear eye protection.

ROFL!!  That's the spirit JaeOnasi!

I never went through Ramen torture during college days; but can say I used to quickly pass the ramen packages in the grocery aisle.  However, at the urging of my young friend in Portugal I tried his quickie recipe (posted above) and was surprised to find that it was very tasty.  And quick!  I like quick now.  LOL

You may wish to avoid Austin, Texas.  I have a friend who lives there and she tells me that Ramen shops are all the rage now.  You might enter into a Ramen form of RPTSD (Ramen Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).  This is probably a malady shared by many a graduate.

Many of the local Asian food markets have some fantastic Ramen we don't usually get in most traditional American grocery stores.

I like to cook the Chinese Noodles. (KA-ME Chinese Noodles Misna -- 8 oz) scramble an egg. cook up some pork, beef, chicken, venison, or Tofu. add in some stir fry veggies. toss in your favorite asian sauce. and you have yourself a nice and inexpensive meal

Yes!  Good reminder for me Valtyrian.  We are blessed with a lot of Asian grocery stores where I live.  The packaged noodles they sell come with a very tasty broth/seasoning package.

Now. . .  if I just find a recipe that is quick and easy for one of my favorite Thai dishes, Rama Thai with tofu (think it's fried?).  It's a curried peanut sauce over (meat or tofu) and brocoli that is served on white rice.

Rather in line with JaeOnasi's ideas

Relieve stress by wrapping fingers firmly around package and crushing till stress goes away or ramen noodles are reduced to powdery consistancy
