Got mead?

Never drank mead before, I thought it was some made up drink that only appears in fantasy game or novels.  Then I became curious and googled for it, found some in the closest liquor store, and I am drinking some right now :D.

It is a bottle of traditional style dry mead from a meadery 70 miles from where I live.  After one glass, got to say I kinda like it.  If it were as inexpensive as regular beer, I might drink it in the place of beer :D.

Mead goes all the way back to the days (and maybe before) of the Vikings.   It seems they had plenty of honey but no grapes.  :)

I prefer it over wine and I never was much of a beer drinker so if I drink, it is my beverage of choice and it goes with any meal or as a desert beverage.   I am so glad you discovered it.  So much better than being a milk-drinker ;)

Grapes grows best in a greenhouse in Scandinavia, but mead isn't a Viking only thing.  China made a variant around 6500-7000 BC and the Viking age started around 793 AD.

Mead is extremely easy to make yourself. You take 2.5-3 lbs honey to 1 gallon of water, then you slowly bring this to a boil and skim the surface.  When it starts being clear, then you transfer the mixture to a carboy.  Let it cool to about 70-75F before adding yeast.

Now you just have to wait until it is done fermenting.

Yeah, mead is great and had a few friends who made some good versions of it.  Definitely better than beer.

Honey mead with a cinnamon and apple base is... lovely. Ditto for a version with orange rind and a dash of cardamon.

Alas, I can't drink it anymore... stupid pancreas. All the same, I remember it well. A Zymergist friend back in Georgia use to make the most amazing meads. SCA-ian times, that. :)

I got this bottle of Samuel Adams Honey Queen Braggot today.  Definitely taste better than beer :D, more expensive too though.

It is an ale brewed with clover honey, orange blossom honey, Chamomile, and alfalfa honey.

Regarding the Honey Queen Braggot, it's alcohol content is only 7.5% and 6 FL OZ but it got me to the feel good state pretty fast.

I am about to buy my deluxe beer making kit from them. They have a section for mead. Which is linked above. I love mead, but it is expensive. I may have to make some now lol.

LoL the character on the right looks like he had his head reshaped by 2 kegs of mead... I would say it is a man, but there is no beard and we all know there are only two types of people in this world; Men (males with beards), and Women (females and males with no Beards).
