I just tried to Fungal grotto for a 3rd time, this time I was 20 and thought it would be only somewhat challenging but I got spanked pretty good.

Also discovered that I missed my window on getting xp for the quest. (or loot?)

I must be missing something I see posts that it's not very damaging so it makes me wonder what we/I am doing wrong.

All the dungeons are difficult at level in terms of damage, although with a good healer and tank it is much easier.  The biggest issue with FG for many people is that most healers and tanks are very limited in the choice of skills at that point.  Once healers get 3-4 skills available they are much better off, and once tanks get the undaunted taunt they can conserve stamina for blocking and moving more.  I'd suggest trying to have dps focus fire one mob in each pack, and have your healer be ready to move fast at the first tier dungeons.

Dungeons are really high on situational awareness.  You need to get out of red, need to block power attacks if you are the tank, and need to help control the fiendish hordes if you are dps.

Probably one of the above is what is going wrong.  I will give you warning in advance, the VR dungeons are far and away more difficult than the normal... and if you aren't spot on in a few encounters you will wipe.  Learn good habits with regard to avoiding damage and maintaining resources for emergencies, it will help a ton later on!

It's a group dungeon Grady.  If you're trying to solo it you are probably going to be trying for quite a while.

What Elth stated - the group dungeons in ESO are not like other games where you can out level them and go back and walk through - there are just so many mobs that seem to ignore your level it will be a challenge for many levels to come.  I have seen groups of 4 level 15's have a challenge if someone is slacking off.

Actually, you can out level them... but it takes a lot more than in other games.  For instance, Fungal Grotto can be solo'd around level 35 with difficulty.  It can be done more easily around level 40.  I ran FG solo at level 37 at one point successfully, but did get beaten down a few times.

Anything above tier 3 requires pretty much a VR 10 in good gear to solo.

The quest gives XP and loot regardless of level.  However, the XP will be very low if you are too high of level, and the loot will be mostly useless (although gold and deconstruction isn't all that bad.)  Most importantly, all the quests give a skill point... and the dungeon achievements give undaunted progress.

Just an FYI, there are 2 group dungeons in each zone.  One is a public dungeon, like Crow's Wood.  The other is an instanced 4 man dungeon like Fungal Grotto.  You may do cross faction instanced dungeons once you have done your own faction's dungeon.  While it is possible to solo these runs, it will be easier with a group.  Most of the public dungeons are 5-6 packs of mobs.  Instanced dungeons tend to range up to 8-9 in a pack.

So yes, bring friends!

Haven't been soloing since I got demolished at 11th the first time I tried.

I group with a lot of inddepenant thinkers. I may be one of them. The first time we were barely level 10.

And it seems that right when we start we have a single player always drop from the group so three of us try to move forward.

We thought we could handle it with a 20 Tank, a 17 tank and a 19 sorc that had resto staff.

Thanks for the tips.

It usually goes like this

We pushed through Deshaan (we don't need to finish Stonefalls we can wipe the mobs) as 12-20 level what evers swapping alts with friends when a single new player shows up.

Then our core three characters the Dragonknight a Nightblade and a Sorc join with misc 4th Templar or Sorcerer

Or we also did Templar, Dragonknight, Nightblade, and Sorc. We can make it to the room we called the Room of Death (The city w/ the goblin King that literally rains arrows on us)  and we can't get past that room (but overconfidience led to chaos and I admit that I turned into Leroy Jenkins out of pure frustration several times)
