It happens with every new game - players accounts get hacked - items go missing - customer service can be a nightmare - people quit the game from disappointment and heartache.
All of this because they used a weak or even moderate password on their account.
This will be compounded by the fact that, at least for now, your account name will show up in guild chat and private tells. Zone chat at least will be your character name you are on. But as I have warned before, we are an extremely large guild. There is no way for Fog, the elders, or anyone for that matter to vouch for every member that joins our ranks. It just isn't possible. Our own guild vaults have been looted in other games from people that hacked into accounts by members - as well as that members characters and their personal vaults.
-Take the time to make a very, very, VERY, strong password. Write it down - store it in a safe place - and share it with no one.
-Don't, for the love of all that is holy - use the same password you are using for another game, e-mail account, or anything else.
-Incorporate as many random symbols, numbers, capitols, nonsensical phrases that you can.
-Don't use a similar password to others that you use but add a couple of numbers.
-Don't use your birthday, mother's maiden name, pet's name, or even your neighbor's name.
Is it a pain to do this - yes, maybe you have to look it up every single time you log into the game. But that extra 30 secs you use to do this could, and probably will (you'll just never know it), save your account from being hijacked and destroyed - which could cost you hours - to days - to weeks of grief. Isn't that 30 extra secs to log in worth that?
Also - don't leave your credit card information on file with your account. Don't let the game save it. Yes, another small time sink to put it in each time - but if their servers get hacked - guess what - your credit card information didn't go down with the ship.
I just want all of us to have as safe an enjoyable experience in the game - any game - as possible.
Safe journ and keep an eye on your six.
