How's it going to work with ESO?
For example, with GW2 launch, if you had a character with a particular name, you could delete that character and retain rights to the name for 24 hrs. So if there were a couple names you wanted, you could first make a character without regard to its looks, just to reserve the name. Then later, at your leisure, delete and remake with the proper amount of attention to hairstyle and whatnot.
How's it going to work with ESO?
It works the same.
I tested a similar scenario out this last beta. (As far as a 24 hour window, I have no idea.)
However, I created some characters. Then I tried to create a character with a name already created. (of course it wouldn't let me). Then I deleted the character. Then I immediately created a new character with that same name. This much I know works.
Of course, if there is not a 24 hour window of time (like GW2) then there is the chance someone else could claim the name.
If there is no 24 hour window, then I think I'll quickly add my character names and then after a few weeks have passed, and I've leveled up my main, then I'll spend time/attention designing the alts.
Well, I have a very long list of last names I can use - so I'm not really worried. It is only the first name that matters to me and with all of these last names to choose from - I'm pretty set.
All my characters will probably have 2 names this time, purely to avoid the naming scramble that feels like a cross between Black Friday sales and a DDOS attack.
I still haven't recovered from the stress of trying to claim "Tyrra" for my asura in GW2. How I wish ArenaNet hadn't been so clear about asura not having last names in lore -- especially when names are locked out game-wide once claimed. Although you could add a nickname/occupation/trait as the second name, I still found it annoying and restrictive.

This is the first MMO I've been in on the start of, so that is an interesting tactic. Spend no time on the creator, just grab the names and come back later.
I'm resurrecting all my DnD character names. Most of them are Drow, but since I like Dunmer I think it will fit nicely.
Im going to give all my alts the same first name (Lateralus) so it is obvious they are all driven by me. I made a userid request as well, for Lateralus, but it was taken. I ended up with Lateralus1. I will have to pvp this Mr @Lateralus when i see him, haha.
Just one thought - if you are big on the lore - just have a good RP story why you don't have a "lore" friendly name. I was fretting over my name since it doesn't match the lore of ES but once I found a good background story of why I bear the name I do - I eased my own mind - and my pain - especially since I wish to be a wood elf but I need to keep my name as it is how everyone that has been in the family for a while identifies me. It hasn't changed for several years on most of the characters in most of the games I play.
I read a post somewhere where a guy tested name reservation - he made then deleted a character and had a friend immediately try to make it, His friend succeeded. So there's no "soft lock " on a name. Which means the strategy of grabbing the name immediately and recreating it after you figure out the sliders is probably a good idea.

I have a long list of names as well. Actually, I have several lists based on the naming conventions of each race I want to play.
I doubt anyone will try to use Dar'Donut and I am starting early morning on Sunday so I'm not going to worry about losing my name. If there someone does happen to take it then I will come up with a new one and update the site ASAP. Hope to see you all on Sunday morning. :)
I read in an official post from ESO early on that the system will see both first and last name together so to give folks a chance to have any name you want because, if you want your name to be John there wont likely be another John <last name> that you want.
So even if there's another Tuz there wont be another Tuz Seaghdha!
At lest that's what I believe.
With both first and last names Im not too worried about my name being taken. I'm sure I'll get some variation of what I'm looking for. Just to help though, I made my character exactly how I wanted on the last beta, then took pics of the slider locations with my phone so I can just match them up in a hurry when it launches. I'm pretty sure I crossed the line into straight ridiculous-ness there, but I'm just so darn excited!
Not at all, Ciridae! I've had my slider locations and everything set and decided for months with screenshots cropped into one full image of all the bars set to display on the monitor right next to my main monitor at launch. Now I wish I had thought of just using the dang phone now!
I'm still likely to rush and try to catch a few names regardless of surnames. But having surnames is somewhat of a release, especially in a game where people don't really seem aware of which toon is who and who is doing what.. any little thing to at least help me bond with my toon is a plus.
All of my characters will be two names, and one of the names will be Orsan. It should make me easy to find. :)
Plan to have two or three names (you can use up to two spaces), and you shouldn't run into much problem (unless you're being cheesy and stealing full name outright from famous characters).
I am debating on the single name for my chars now too - all with lore specific last name. The first name is unique enough I think that it won't be taken at launch.
I'll probably keep Tyrra as the first name for all my toons. With a guild as big as ours is, I've gradually come to favor ease of recognition over uniqueness when naming my characters (I ended up renaming my stable of alts in GW2 for that reason). Their last names will be what sets them apart.
Since I'm not as strict as far as lore goes and I like the 2 name idea, I think I'll stick with Macewen as the last name for all of my characters. That is what I did in GW2 and I didn't have any problems so I don't forsee any in ESO either. Other than that, I'll just go with whatever feels right at the time.
I usually go with the name of Kyla Rose or a variation of it for my games. I am at a loss of what to name my kajiit though cause I want to actually do roleplay in this game and be accurate. Kyla Rose does not sound like an accurate name at all. I could use some suggestions if anyone would care to help:)

<name> of Family Tyrra

or somit like that ay

I thought of making a Khajiit and used "Names two Birds" as a thought.
Given it a short of description you could maybe use something that ends in "Flower" or "Flowers"
Seed planting here, "Named After Flower" pretty weak I know, sucks even but you get the idea right
My main worry is the Chars we get to use can we use é, à, ì, ë etc
How about "Enchanted Flower that Sings" or " Clever Flower that Stings" (Assassin). all kinds of possibilities.
I'm going to have a Nord family with patronymics for second names, that will account for at least 4 toons. I can have the parents with the age slider set to moderately wrinkly and the children at young and pretty.
You could have your crafting alts have occupational names like Smith or Brewer.
I'm expecting a lot of silly Argonian names but there are a lot of them in the game already.

Khajiit names, particularly among males, often have a prefix before them, usually though not always separated by an apostrophe. In general, the rest of the name following the prefix should be capitalized, though the games are not consistent on this point. Some names also have a hyphenated suffix (e.g.: '-Dar') indicating two titles which, according to Jobasha in Morrowind, is considered foolish. The meanings of the prefixes are as follows:
(This fits very nicely with my planned Do'Klar, as opposed to my Imperial Doklar or my Dunmer Dok'Lar)

thanks for the help:) I will check out the generator and I really like the clever flower that stings :) it made me smile and gave me some interesting ideas. My account name will still be kylarose so people will be able to identify me in guild but out in the world I will try to go with something lore specific.
Argonian names are great; my lizard in beta was 'Presses-random-buttons' though at launch, if I create another, I'll probably use something a little more RP :)

Can we use hyphens and apostrophes in our names? They are common syntax for a lot of Elder Scrolls NPC's, especially Orcs, Argonians, and Khajiit.
I've never had to much issue with names simply because I've used 2 name format for a while, still usually easy to fin because all my names start with a D (Draug Drok Demira, the list goes on) and they all end with Doretlion
Might go different with my argonian and call him Dor the Lion
i know im kinda late to the game saying this, but oh my god i didnt even think about a surname... last mmo i played was wow so i made scarydrew and scaryshaman and scarypaladin etc but now i think ill go with Scary Drew and Scary Templar etc or maybe Scarydrew Templar... or like for a templar do Scarydrew Lightbringer or something

I remember you guys saying that you can have both a first name and a surname. Will you also take into consideration allowing a fixed list of prepositions or middle names, or do you think it’s too much? Characters like Mjoll the Lioness and Argonians have multi-word names.
Answer:
You can use more than one space in your character name, so the examples you picked are all viable. In fact, the current limit is a maximum of four hyphens, apostrophes, or spaces in total, so you can come up with all kinds of names, like Nh’yen the Ter-Grol. This should be especially convenient for players who want lore-based names for their Argonian or Khajiit!

Like Mulch I logged in about 5 minutes before official launch time and realized "Nur" was already taken. Figured oh...well...lost....will just go with my alternate.
This morning Niri reaches out to me and let's me know Nur is reserved and did I want it...jumped at the chance and now have the name I was shooting for.
We did confirm that there is no soft lock. The moment Niri deleted the name I was able to acquire it.
