Does anyone know how leveling up is calculated?

As I was playing this was very confusing to me.  Typically the more you use a certain skill the more xp you get and then you level etc.  In the beta I noticed my skills only seemed to advance once I completed a quest or objective.  I very rarely got any skill gains during a fight or while crafting etc.

What leads me to this question is can one level by simply crafting? Or does one need to go through as many story quests as possible etc?

Well crafting requires resources, and that means you have to travel to collect them or at least at first till you get a crafting helper...

Leveling is indeed by using a skill.  Ways that you can level faster,

1. Complete quests

2. Use proper combo's and finesse in combat

3. marry someone

4. Travel in groups and use synergy alot.

5. Kill monsters

My experience in beta was that killing monsters did very little level you. I did however gain levels crafting , I leveled my crafting a few times....

Ah Marrying someone... that is definitely an experience.

Lol - I am not a big advocate of in game romance.  Anyone want to marry me for the xp  bonus? :-)

I promise the same amount of XP gain in return when we group together

I will craft you whatever you need (if you supply the components - come on now, marriage is a 2 way street)

I will treat you right and never abuse you

I will love you unconditionally until one of us rage quits

I will never look at another Nord woman below the neck (no promises when it comes to Khajiit - rarrrr)

Crafting does not offer PLAYER experience. Player experience is handled separately from skill and other experience (unlike other Elder Scroll games) and is obtained from killing mobs and completing quests. Now, with the Rings of Mara, and the ability to marry someone, you will be able to gain additional exp while being in a party with that person. If trying to level quickly, biggest advice I can give is to avoid doing crafting and complete every single quest you see. Reason I advice to avoid crafting... it is a time sink and will distract you for hours on end if you fall into it.

I think marrying is more of a nerf for leveling.  I know when I pull wife aggro I see a sharp decline in my leveling xp.

Thanks Aingeal - I was getting the feeling that the non-killing/questing stuff was not gaining anything.  It seemed to me that even killing/use of skills didn't level very much at all - completing quests is always when i would see all my skills gain.  Questing will be extremely important.

However, I am a nerd for crafting, if marrying crafting would give me an XP bonus I would do it.

I can not wait to do crafting but if the guild will not benefit from a crafter then I may go straight into leveling etc.  If the guild can benefit from some dedicated crafters I will definitely be in for anything except provisioning :-)

I meant my crafting skills leveled when I crafted, I dont think gained a player level crafting, but I do remember seeing improvements in my crafting skills.

Questing is the #1 way to level,

the fastest way to level in my experience would be - get married, travel in a group, be good at your class with finess, use synergy alot,  and do the quest story line.

I expect to get to level 25 before the end of the  pre-game. But alot depends on the group I am with and the skill level we all have working together.
