Well, I can't say it will hold my attention longer than GW2 or not... since I'm still playing GW2 mainly for the WvWvW with the family and I keep hoping they will release some actual new content (in GW2). But I can say that I hopes it does exceed GW2 and with ESO's knack for exploration as a big part of their worlds I do have high hopes.
I've learned over the years - or decades - of playing these games that as long as I can make a character that isn't "ugly" I can survive with the character creator if there is a lot of other content.
Am I the only one that isn't impressed by the video?
Being completely impartial toward that video it looked almost identical to Rift: Planes of Telara. While Rift's characters looked cool, and they had lots of facepaint and hair options, I was always disappointed because they only used one face and one body shape with a very limited morph triangle. Currently GW2 holds the crown for best character creation in a "game that I would play".
I don't buy into the character creation either. I mean, one too many times I've spent too much time with the character creation details only to have my hair and face covered with a helmet, or all those tattoos covered with a cloak.
I have to agree strongly with Morigana. As long as my toon's overall appearance isn't UGLY, the small details don't really matter. When I play these games, all I am seeing is the back of my toon. (helmet, cloak, and armor). How far apart my eyes are, my eye color, my hair style, my body build, etc doesnt matter. You just don't see it when playing the game.
When ESO comes out, I will spend as little time clicking through the character creation. When everyone else is deciding how big their arms should be, I will be actually playing the game! :)
I love the character creator! I will spend hours on my toons looks. Then I will spend weeks looking for armor that compliments my toon. And finding the perfect dye to pull it all together. I have even rerolled a toon because they did not look good with the armor I fell in love with.
I agree about helms covering the toon up which is why I love it when they have the feature to not show the helm. I have even gone as far as to not wear a helm if I couldn't hide it.
i love the game and to explore, but I want to make sure my character has the look to fully immerse me as I stare at them for hours upon hours.
yep i perfer no helms also , atm i`m goofing around with a warhammer warrior priest build in skyrim , basicly made a imperial race and use crusader build, which in morrowwind and obvlion was 2h , 1h, restro and dest and heavy armor , block , and chose bald graphic and wear a circlet ,
and wielding a 2h hammer with asorb health on it , to repesent divine assault damage heal attack . heavy restro , build and a little alteration for buffs . along with heavy armor since no medium in skyrim and 2h hammer perks ..
Kinda fun , back story is was fighting a chaos mage and followed them thru a portal which ported me to skyrim so I`m a warrior priest of sigmar roaming skyrim and converting the wicked to the Light in sigmars name. ha ha .
but ya even tho most looks are hidden by armor, helms etc i still spend a bit of time getting my look down and ya have rerolled toons a couple lvls when i didn`t think it looked right .
Nice back story! That is the kind of stuff that makes me enjoy the game that much more.
yep still waiting to see the classes in eso , from what i read they have 4 archtypes you can choose but as with all their games class type doesn`t limit you to what you can use as in armor or wep etc .
So will see what i can make , since we choose nords , dark elfs , a warr priest would seem funny as a nord sooo may go for remaking my daoc Thane class or a evil dark elf shadowknight ie knight /necro or a nord shaman . like EQ had
endless possibllites
If you want more information on Elder Scrolls Online, Tamriel Foundry has a lot of information, including the current skill trees that were seen at the last gaming conventions.
So far, the Character creation and class system seem all too much like Rift for my liking. Maybe there will be more options, but so far I'm not that impressed by the whole 4 archtype thing. It was a great concept in Rift, but it still felt like just 4 classes in the end. Please don't mistake my concerns for pessimism, I am still excited for the game, I am just not that easily impressed by what I have seen so far.
Thanks for the link! I will have to spend some time reading through all the info gathered there.
I don't envy game developers. They have to build a game that appeals to all the different gamers in each of us. And I know we all view each subsequent game through the lenses of past games. Hopefully, they find a sweet spot that appeals to most of us and incorporate lessons learned from other games.
I'm not too sure that we actually see a "great" character creator, but it is a good one. I basically look for a couple of things when I look at the character creator. Do I get height, weight, hair color, hair style, skin color, and tattoos. This is all there. Now, does it have the variety I want?
This is where I can't be positive. Height adjustment seems ok and weight adjustment the same thing. I didn't see really red hair and I have watched it 3x. I am fond of red hair but I didn't see this. I did see a couple of hair styles I would use but nothing too wild (I like wild/crazy hair styles) so I can get by with this. Skin color seemed lacking - nothing really dark on the humans and I do tend to go that way. Tattoos - well here I saw quite a few I would use so they got that one but I would like greater color variety. (GW2 fell short here since humans didn't get tattoos and I originally went with Norns since they had them - but I'm not a fan of the way they do other things - so I went back to humans).
This is why I originally stated I could be happy with this one since they are maybe slightly better than average (since they have all the weight adjustments) but I believe they could do more hair color and skin color options. But - just like GW2 added a bunch of hair colors I think any dev team can always add more after launch. But - if they are sticking with their franchise of ES - then I can't swear they aren't doing that. Honestly I didn't pay that much attention to the hair colors and skin colors in those games.
In actuality - I need my character to look good when I choose her as I log in - after that it goes by armor and weapons since I'm not staring at her or anyone else's face when I play. I notice armor, their mount, their weapons, and their actions but I couldn't tell anyone the color of their character's eyes or if they were smiling or frowning - if they were a mid brown - light brown - or "carmel" color for their skin. But - did they have white hair, black hair, red hair or blond - that is usually obvious. This is why I go with a crazy hairstyle and red hair - that is usually obvious but if I can't hide my helm - that becomes moot also.
If it has a "random" feature, I'm happy. One click, and done! :)
All the random faces remind me of being in an airport.
