Elder Scrolls Online - Which faction are you most interested in and why?

As we all know, The Elder Scrolls Online consists of three factions, the Aldmeri Dominion, the Daggerfall Convenant, and the Ebonheart Pact.

Of these three factions, which are you most likely to join when playing and why?

THE ALDMERI DOMINION

Those with power should rule, and it should be taken by force…

“I have no hatred for the races of Man, but they are young. Like all children, they are driven by emotion. They lack the wisdom that comes with age.  I would sooner place an Altmer infant on the Ruby Throne than surrender Tamriel to their capricious whims. The Altmer, the Bosmer and the Khajiit share the common traits of intelligence, patience and reason.  We do not seek riches or plunder. Domination is not our goal, nor is the acclamation of power for its own sake.  Today we make our stand. Today we take back the Ruby Throne, which is ours by ancient right and the blessings of the Divines. Stand with us.”

- Queen Ayrenn

Altmer

The High Elves, or Altmer, arrived in Tamriel thousands of years ago from Old Aldmeris. They see themselves, perhaps justifiably, as the ruling race of Tamriel. They are a highly cultured people, known for their breathtaking architecture and massive libraries of histories and creative works. They tend to be isolationists, largely remaining on Summerset Isle, and only emerge when they perceive a great threat to their homeland. They are powerful mages and warriors, and the de facto leaders of the Aldmeri Dominion.

Bosmer

The Wood Elves, or Bosmer, are mischievous, curious and nimble. Because their homeland of Valenwood is often attacked by the Colovian Imperials, Wood Elves are expert at the art of defense. They are also gifted archers, perhaps the best in all of Tamriel. The capital of the Aldmeri Dominion, Elden Root, lies in the heart of their homeland. It has evolved into a center of political and cultural importance and is of vital strategic importance in the battle to control Tamriel.

Khajiit

The population of the proud feline Khajiit has dwindled in recent years following a devastating outbreak of Knahaten Flu. They owe a great debt to Ayrenn, Queen of the High Elves, for her help in restoring order from the chaos that followed the plague. They have a wry wit and a hedonistic outlook, but they are fearsome on the field of battle. They are the strong arm of the Aldmeri Dominion.

THE DAGGERFALL COVENANT

“Our unity and vision will protect and lead Tamriel into a glorious new dawn… Our supplies dwindle. Our trade routes are shut down. Our people suffer. Why?  Because a pretender sits upon the Ruby Throne. Let us take up arms!  Let the fields of Cyrodiil run red with the blood of our fallen enemies! But let us spare the lives of a few, so that they may return to their homelands to tell their fellows the fate they met at the hands of the Daggerfall Covenant. One land! One Emperor! Who among you will stand with me?”

-High King Emeric

Breton

The men and women of High Rock were once ruled by High Elf overlords. Some Elven blood still runs in their veins, giving Bretons an innate grasp of magic that distinguishes them from the other human races. Passionate and flamboyant, intelligent and resourceful, the Bretons are renowned and talented craftsmen, shrewd merchants, gallant cavaliers, and inventive wizards. They can also be proud and quarrelsome. Tales of warfare between the kingdoms of High Rock account for much of their history, but most revere the Eight Divines and value prosperity over glory.

Orc

Though other races often regard the Orcs as barbarians and even beasts, these noble warriors have an ancient culture forged from endless warfare in their harsh mountain homelands. Orcs live under a simple code of honor by which the strong survive and the strongest rule. As the greatest smiths in Tamriel, their weapons and armor are prized by warriors everywhere. During the reign of the Second Empire, when their kingdom of Orsinium was finally granted provincial status, its restoration helped solidify their devotion to the new Daggerfall Covenant.

Redguard

The Redguards of Hammerfell are talented and athletic warriors, born to battle. A desert people, their ancestors migrated to Tamriel from the lost continent of Yokuda. Their culture is based on preserving ancient traditions and defying their harsh environment. They prize honor and dignity above all else, combining a deep reverence for the divine with a suspicion of all things magical. Their capital is the merchant port of Sentinel, but their roots are deep in the sands of the Alik'r Desert. In their youth, Redguards endure a rite of passage in the desolate wastes of Alik'r as a test of endurance and discipline. Only the strongest survive.

THE EBONHEART PACT

War, it’s something we’ve been accustomed to for many, many years.

“Before Ysgramor led the Nord people south, our descendants flourished in the frozen continent of Atmora, and to this day our people prefer the bitter climes of northern Tamriel. The Dark Elves abide in Morrowind, a harsh land of ashfall and perpetual earthquakes. The Argonians endure the treacherous and impenetrable depths of Black Marsh. The alliance between our races was born in dark times, when Nord, Dunmer and free Argonians fought as one to repel the invasion of the Akaviri slavemasters. Our greatest strength is the adversity we have overcome. Our resolve is glacial, our might is forged in fire, and our courage, cultivated by the beasts of the jungle. We are Ebonheart. We are as one. And by this, our victory is assured.”

-Jorunn the Skald-King

Argonian

The Argonians are possessed of a cool intellect, and are well-versed in the magical arts, stealth, and the use of blades. They are also guerilla warfare experts, long accustomed to defending their borders from invaders. They often serve as the scouts and skirmishers for the forces of the Pact.

Dunmer

The Dark Elf homeland of Morrowind has been invaded many times by the Akaviri and the Nords. This history of conflict has transformed the Dunmer into hardened warriors. They also have a natural affinity for magic and great intellect, making them skillful sorcerers.

Nord

The Nords once conquered most of Tamriel, and as a result, feel a certain entitlement to rule. They broke the power of the Ayleids, nearly drove the High Elves out of High Rock, and conquered much of Resdayn, the precursor to Morrowind. The Nords are excellent with arms. They are quick to anger, boisterous, and strong. They are natural-born warriors who fight with an ecstatic ferocity that terrifies their enemies.

I've always played a Breton Thief, ever since Daggerfall. I love the rich history behind the Breton, from their oppression by the Altmer to their reputation as ruthless merchants. I also like them because of their partially elven ancestry and the whole Medieval England vibe. The Redguard are also an extremely cool race as are the Orsimer (Orcs). I don't know what faction or class I will play though, it depends on where the family go.

Daggerfall Covenant, my first character in all Elder Scrolls games since Daggerfall have been Breton Mage/Rogues. If it's allowed I'll have characters in all three factions so I can play more of the story lines and play with whichever friends are online at the time. My second choice is the Ebonheart Pact, Dunmer mage of making things go BOOM! Then the Aldmeri Dominion last... meh. Probably a Bosmer archer. @Elth: Faction is determined by race as far as I've heard.

It looks like the alliance I would pick depends on which race I want to play. I tend to go for battle mage type builds. I also for whatever reason play Human type races because I like to relate a bit more to them and vanquish those less human like. Very racist of me I know. So if I had to pick I would go for DaggerFall Covenant because they fit my profile and I like usuing Bretons as battle mage type. Thats if I have had to pick. I love to experiment and see how things go. How is Beta going?

I will more than likely be Aldmeri Dominion. High/Wood Elf + Khajit are ALL races I love. The only other few that I like are Dark Elves & Nord. Others I tend to play at times but not my go to's.

Ever since I played Morrowind I've been a fan of the Altmer playing as a battle mage so most likely going Aldmeri Dominion. Really would love to explore the entirety of Summerset Isle when it's in game.

Daggerfall or Ebonhart. Skyrim was awesome and still fresh in my memory. But I don't like lizard people much, so Daggerfall is a nice option also. Any faction will be fine, really. In the end I will follow the family.

I always been a fan of the Bretons and The different Elves in the series. I will probably go back to the healer role that I have missed in GW2 so I will probably be whatever of those classes fits the family alliance and looks good as a healer, potentially stealth healer.

I usually play a thief/mage and have picked the Dunmer for that a couple times. But I'm pretty flexible and willing to try different things. Does anyone know if we need to be in the same alliance to play together as a guild?

I would imagine the guild needs to be in the same faction. I believe they have some sort of rvr element, and the three factions are opposed. I don't care for the faction and race being linked... it feels too restrictive.

Will probably go for Daggerfall, as an orc of some sort. Will try the Ebonheart as a nord (maybe argonian, depending on their customizations), as well as the Aldermi Dominion as a khajiit. Not sure which I will go with first. Guess it depends on if Gaiscioch will have an official branch. If we do, then I will choose whichever of those 3 races I listed as my first and main, while the other 2 will be alts and such. Though I do prefer the beast races over the human, which is why I am torn between nord and argonian. That one depends on the argonian looks customization. Was not a fan of the way they looked in Skyrim, though they weren't too bad looking in Oblivion. So, Nord/Argonian, Khajiit, and Orc will be my picks.

My personal favorite has always been the Argonians. No real lore-based reason behind it, I just like lizards. :P Other than that, I'd probably go with a Dunmer, since the game will be set during a time when the Tribunal still retained their godlike powers, and I think it would be interesting to see how the Dunmer were back then, back before the Temple were persecuting Nerevarines and all that jazz that happened in Morrowind. EDIT: Also, if the Tribunal were to be in-game as NPCs or something, I want front row seats to THAT show. Vivec ftw.

The important question is which faction will Gaiscioch be playing. I found this interesting when reading about the Alliance War: "In The Elder Scrolls Online, the highest-ranking player of an alliance is crowned Emperor when their alliance takes control of the Imperial City. You aren’t just fighting for your alliance; you’re fighting for the opportunity to be crowned Emperor, yourself."

I'd want to play as a Kahjiit if possible, but if races are going to be faction locked (don't know if they are or not), then I guess I'm going to play as an Argonian. Either way, I'm going with the Ebonheart Pact. I refuse to play in the Aldmeri faction. EDIT: Forget what I said about Argonian being my second choice. I'd be an Orc. I'll be Bulosh again! :D

@Viktor: Yeah, the races will be faction locked (high elf/wood elf/khajiit; nord/dark elf/argonian; breton/orc/redguard). And I thought of playing Sharha as an orc sneaky archer (or just archer), as I was never really a fan of magic when I play the edler scrolls games. Though may try out magic. Dunno. But I will be playing some kind of archer.

Part of me would be torn if Gaiscioch picked only one Faction. I would say it would be good to have one main faction but two sub factions because not everyone would primarily play in one but might play alts in the other two. Long time till that time comes though.

I'd probably want to go Aldmeri Dominion personally, to play a khaijit. I've always found them to be a very fun race. But I'm pretty flexible. I like the Ebonheart Pact too. I had a lot of fun bashing dragon skulls in with my Nord in Skyrim! So getting to crack more skulls in ESO with a Nord lady would be fun for me too. I could also play an elf though, I tend to have at least one running around in every MMO I pick up! I really hope they put in some sort of cross-faction guilding so we can be under the same roof though. I really love that feature in Rift, and Guild Wars 2 having no factions makes it really nice to not have to get stuck somewhere because that's where all your friends are... like me ending up stuck playing Alliance in WoW for a while. >.<

My thoughts are that GSCH will pick on faction so we aren't fighting ourselves in the RvR area. Also, I think Ben will pick the faction with the closest lore to Celtic he can get. =) I know I'll play anything in the game, so no big deal which way we go to me.

"My thoughts are that GSCH will pick on faction so we aren't fighting ourselves in the RvR area. Also, I think Ben will pick the faction with the closest lore to Celtic he can get. =) I know I'll play anything in the game, so no big deal which way we go to me." Briseadh. The funny thing about ESO compared to Hibs/mids/Albs from DAOC is that ESO only offers the non-Celtic cultures. Nord are similar to Mids and Bretons are similar to Albs, but there isn't really a Hib substitute (Maybe wood elves). In any case it will be interesting times ahead. Personally I will have at least one of each faction, I really want a Breton Thief, a Redguard scimitar wielding warrior type, a Nord with a big bushy beard, a Bosmer archer, Khajiit, Argonian and Orsimer.... Altoholic incoming

Geez, Elth :P My altoholic nature is being scared of ESO. I'm going to have my Wood Elf and maybe a Khajit. Then I will have one toon in each of the other two factions but those will be when I have finished the Aldmeri storyline and needing to play someone else :P

I always play Elves or whatever Cat/Wolf race so makes it Aldmeri for me. This is the only thing I've seen about this game I do not like. You shouldn't be forced into a faction based on race. Would be cool if they have had an option like EQ2 in that you do quest to prove your loyalty to your new faction before you can switch.

not sure yet really it is a toss up between a Nord Thane character based on daoc thane 1h hammer and lighting attacks , with chain or plate armor . Or a breton character based on the vigilant of stendarr holy warrior priest fanatics Always walk in the light ... or we will drag you into it . May Stendarr grant you mercy ... for the vigilant have none . now a third possible toon is a Shadow knight Dark elf heavy plate armor with necomancer spells raise dead , posion based and fear /cold based attacks etc old school EQ SK

I think the prime reason they made the game faction based was the time period is about land control and the fight for the throne. Later on in the normal Elder Scroll games, the games don't really show that land grab feel. It is sad in a way that it isn't worked out like the Orders in Guild Wars 2 where it is personal choice but otherwise it isn't something astronomically new with games. My only wish is more than one Gaiscioch guild to represent the three factions but that only works if we have the people to man each or at least lead each.

I have not decided yet. I am most interested in Daggerfall Covenant - Breton or The Aldmeri Dominion- Khajiit. Since I know very little of the background for ESO I believe I will wait and see which faction is chosen for Gaiscioch before I do more than a little research.

Ebonheart - Nord/Argonian/Darkelf - Nord yes, Argonian and Darkelf - no Daggerfall - Breton/Redguard/Orc - Although I've played a Breton alot in the previous games.. nothing about this faction appeals to me.<

I've had a deep down grudge against the Dark Elves since Morrowind. They did not make me feel welcome (although it made for a great atmosphere). I would often go hang out at imperial forts or with the skooma vendors cause they didn't automatically curse me whenever I walked by. There was that one non Dark Elf village with the house full of Orcs...that place was just creepy.

Though I like the Aldmeri Dominion the most based on what we've heard so far and the fact that I've always played as a Bosmer or Altmer in the single player Elder Scrolls games I will probably end up having one character from each faction if I do end up playing this game. Aldmeri Dominion - Altmer Daggerfall Covenant - Breton Ebonheart Pact - Nord

"Side" Preferences: Aldmeri Dominion - Highelf/Woodelf/Khajiit - All of these, with Woodelf taking the lead of all of the races. Ebonheart - Nord/Argonian/Darkelf - Nord yes, Argonian and Darkelf - no Daggerfall - Breton/Redguard/Orc - This faction doesn't do a lot for me. Also, I strong suspect Shadowclan (reflink: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadowclan - I used to roll with them through about Shadowbane) will make an appearance for the Orcs and they would make excellent and resilient opponents. Other thoughts: 1. As a healer for almost my entire MMO life (20+ years), I really miss healing in GW2. I look forward to hearing what is coming with this game and hope that I will get to return to my preferred role. 2. I usually alt to DPS/Range and very, very rarely play melee. 3. My roleplay and lore interests are strong, but usually run to the mystical and mythic side; it will be enjoyable to see what they put in place and how I can weave it to find my esoteric fun. 4. While I once was quite the PvP devotee, interest has waned over time (mostly due to the changes in style of play and general loss of honorable fighting I have perceived). I find in my WvW time with Gaiscioch that it still exists, so I would not be adverse to trying it here. 5. I thoroughly enjoy good crafting systems and expect that I will have much to offer both in beta testing as well as to the family at launch should the system implementation be solid. 6. For reasons mentioned elsewhere, I am not the fan of dungeons/raiding that I used to be; while I am happy to go along if it is needed, you can largely expect my dyslexia and resulting anxiety/confusion/missteps to mean a higher level of annoyance/frustration than would be the norm. 7. I excel at exploration, mapping a game world in my mind (landmarks and mnemonics) and being able to direct someone how to get from A to B. When not actively testing/playing, you can pretty much count on me being out somewhere on my own, looking for new vistas to see, interesting ambient behavior, and decidedly aesthetic things (Bartle Test: Explorer = 80% Socializer = 67% Achiever = 47% Killer = 7%).

no favorites. in no special order, Aldmeri Dominion (thief-like Wood Elf) Daggerfall Covenant (mage-like Breton) Ebonheart Pact (warior-like Norn) I always play thief in elder scrolls titles. In skyrim Im playing archery/sneak/smithing which = sniper class. I guess Ill do aldmeri first. *edit* Im a bit worried about the factions as well. I just ran across an interview between mmorpg.com and paul sage. dont know who paul sage is, but i guess he has something to do with the game. "When I asked him if players from different Alliances (factions) in TESO would be able to join the same guild, he said that it was a good question and to wait and see... interesting, no?" http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/821/feature/7061

Going down this same path, would it not be feasible for the 'megaserver' to allow players to enter opposing faction homelands if they tick those boxes? Considering this is all phased instancing, it gives the players checking those boxes the choice to play how they want to play. Select a COOP option and your Orc is free to hold hands and skip through flowery fields with a Dunmer. Alternatively, select ORvR and you enter a phased Tamriel where the enemy is able to enter your homeland and PvP as they please. I'm only speculating at the possibilities of this so-called mega server technology.

Doh! Looks like there's a definite separation, so Daggerfall covenant. I always have a breton thief. In the elder scrolls universe, the bretons, and the theif class feel like my favorite pair of jeans =D Oddly enough, I dont play the thief class ever in any mmo. I tried one in gw, and got one to level 2 :/ Im always a mage or healer in mmo's. Thief is just never the way to go for me in any mmo. Casting and healing is my thing. In the Elder Scrolls on the other hand, its the exact opposite. Always thief. Always. Wierd O.o

The thing I love about TES games (aside from the exploration of the world) is that you aren't restricted at all to a type. So, I can play a sneaky archer, an in-your-face warrior, or fire-flinging mage all on the same character. TESO has presented a quandary with the introduction of classes. I was rather hoping that the class selection would be something like Rift, just three base classes and then you play then however you desired.

Well, my first play through of Skyrim was as a Bosmer but I decided to create a new character as a Redguard. Really enjoying the race and the class I built, light armor and dual wielding (either daggers, swords, or maces (I have the Daedric artifacts from each set of weapons). So... for me, I'm probably going to end up with a Bosmer and a Redguard if I end up playing ESO.

@Elth my current breton thief is a 100 stealth/smithing/archery guy so x3 damage with a maxed out bow and dragonbone arrows. Its like being the sniper class of skyrim =O Lasershark is obviously a natural at playing any type of sniper class as well as anything laser oriented The rubber shark squeaky-toys are the natural predators amongst the squeaky-toy habitat in case you didnt know. Although the squeaky part does cause some issues when doing stealth ops. But thats what silencers are for. Or a good thick scarf :/ *squeak* O.o Not sure if you've seen my new guy, sharkbanana but obviously way better at going stealth in banana mode but no where near as dangerous as my #1 mmo copilot. Out of his laser gear so not to scare anybody ._.

His only fear is flying. Pity the fool that gets into close combat with MR T-Rex.

I look forward to representing the Argonians. Probably the least played race but very very interesting lore and background if you read up on them. I thought I'd want Redguard as their similarities towards the Fremen of Dune but since we're going Ebonheart the Argonians seem very interesting now. I look forward to employing the guerilla tactics in game the species is known for in the lore.

Looking at remaking my daoc viking  Thane so the nords work great  , as will a Dark elf oldschool EQ  shadowknight .  while i`ve played a Pally in every mmo since 99  breton  or imperial would be a great fit their but  were not doing that  alliance hehe .

Guess i could make a Dark elf  templer and set it up like my old dark elf cleric of innurok in EQ . depends on spell list etc .

Atm  in skyrim i`m playing a witch hunter  no armor just caster tunic and cloaked hood, normal boots gloves , using silver sword and conjured bow , dest  lighting  magic, restro, and alteration  skin armor buffs with fear/fury from illusion .

always liked the fantic witch hunters and servants of stendar type   as the witch hunter general from warhammer stated better to hang a whole village of innocets lest 1 agent of chaos escape justic heh

which means obviously that i'll be in Ebonheart.

as for what class I think a dragonknight sounds rather cool

For roleplaying purposes, I have always leaned more towards mercenary-type characters, that being said the preorder enables me to play with the family on Ebonheart while playing whatever character I wish. So, now I can go back to my original choice of race, Altmer. :D Personally, I'm glad they enabled this option since there always exists that element within a population who only cares about coin and who is willing to pay the most.
