Gaiscioch Sets Eyes To Future With The Elder Scrolls Online

On November 11th 2013, the Gaiscioch celebrated their 12th year by releasing a new community trailer that announced plans for the fifth chapter of their vast gaming community. Chapter Five is a true return to the Gaiscioch roots, harking back to Dark Age of Camelot. They will rejoin old friend Matt Firor, with the eagerly awaited expansion into The Elder Scrolls Online.

Over the past decade, the Gaiscioch Social Gaming Community has searched for a game that was both easy to play, and features epic siege warfare, memorable raids, intuitive crafting, a wealth of roleplaying material, and plenty of uncharted wonders to explore.

"Friendships and social ties are what keep people interested in an online game and it is what gives the game a life of its own."

Paul Sage
Creative Director, ZeniMax Online

After careful evaluation across a 200+ item compatibility scoring process, the Gaiscioch have determined that The Elder Scrolls Online not only meets their base requirements, but also has a higher compatibility rating than all their past chapters. At this early stage of development, and entirely based on items confirmed to be currently in game, The Elder Scrolls Online scores an 83%. Up until now, the previous highest scoring game was Dark Age of Camelot with a 79%.

The Elder Scrolls Online features a robust, massive siege system, a ridiculous amount of content to explore, and an impressive amount of dungeons to venture into. The crafting system takes the best features from current generation MMORPG's and places a traditional Elder Scrolls twist on it.

The Gaiscioch will be bringing their inclusive family-oriented ethos, and large scale public community events to this new world. For the first time in Gaiscioch history, they will no longer be limited to the audience of their server community. With this expansion into The Elder Scrolls Online, the entire player base will be their audience.

When the news was shared with ZeniMax Online about the Gaiscioch decision to open Chapter 5 in the Elder Scrolls Online, creative director Paul Sage replied "Friendships and social ties are what keep people interested in an online game and it is what gives the game a life of its own. Communities like Gaiscioch are the life-blood of what we do, and we are excited to have them in The Elder Scrolls Online."

For those that have joined one of the Gaiscioch public community events including: "Siege Night" in Dark Age of Camelot, the "Battle for Badlands" in Warhammer Online, the "Telara Saga" in RIFT, the "Great Tyrian Adventure" in Guild Wars 2, you can expect to find similar events over the next few years in The Elder Scrolls Online. Such events have been widely successful, bringing hundreds of players many hours of enjoyment, and lasting memories. Massively.com called Gaiscioch's public community events "A Community Driven Phenomenon". They have received accolades and praise from media, game development studios, and players alike.

Founder and Activities Director Benjamin "Foghladha" Foley stated "In the end it's not the loot or accolades that players walk away with, it's the memories and friendships they make that extend past a game’s life."  He went on to state "Public community events are the foundation of our community. The Gaiscioch are much like a traveling circus who seek to entertain a large audience. We seek to bring enjoyable experiences to the community at large, and give them the opportunity to experience content that they normally might not see. The Elder Scrolls Online gives us an amazing opportunity to have an entire player base as our audience. We have carefully evaluated this game and stand behind ZeniMax Online and their quest to make The Elder Scrolls Online an epic experience. We look forward to the days ahead."

The Elder Scrolls Online is set to release in 2014, 20 years after the release of Elder Scrolls Arena. It brings to the MMORPG Community a rich history and over 10 Million worldwide fans. The Elder Scrolls series has been the benchmark of western RPG's for over two decades. The Gaiscioch are excited to bring their public community adventures to this legendary game series.

ABOUT THE GAISCIOCH SOCIAL GAMING COMMUNITY

The Gaiscioch were founded in 2001 as a social community based in the MMORPG classic Dark Age of Camelot. Since its inception the Gaiscioch have grown to over 5,800 people in 64 countries. For more than a decade they have devoted their community toward creating a fun and enjoyable environment while using their reach to host public community events, and real world charity events. With a strong focus on community their endgame goal is to create memories, friendships, and participate in the overall success of the community both in game and out. It is through gaming, and social interaction that we forge new friendships and relationships.

Great job on the trailer, you've got an impressive knack for cinematics.  I've never really pursued any of the Elder Scrolls but after this announcement I plan on catching up to some of the lore and trying some of the old games to prepare for ESO.  Although I've only been a family member for almost a year, I look forward to many more years of gaming alongside you all.

Great video. I've been following ESO for a while and the one thing that bugs me is the monthly fee. But it looks like a great game.

Also, a guild-noob question: what does this new step means for GW2?

We will continue to support Guild Wars 2 as our Free-2-play home. However due to the limitations for guilds in gw2 we wont be making any efforts to grow until they raise guild limits, give us a last login, and some sort of crods guild communication like alliances or custom chat channels. Right now the more people that join the harder and more damaging it is to our membership. For every invite we make we must remove someone. Even though this is inly a temporary removal until they checkin on the site it does offend people and turn them off our community. Until we see these things change our primary focus will have to be on eso. This doesnt mean nothing will be going on in gw2 it just means we wont be making an effort to grow our numbers there.

I too am saddened by the monthly fee system for ESO, but business is business, and that is their business model. I will have to weigh heavily on if I will try it out or not.

I can't wait to join my family again in a game.  I've not really been playing any games with relish.  I've played a bit of Neverwinter but with only one character and not an every day thing.

I've played Almost every single Elder Scroll's games.  Daggerfall was my favorite... well favorite until the next one that came out lol.

I just wished it would launch in December vs spring of next year.

Looking forward to being with you all again!

The same as most mmos $14.99. The way I look at it is its cheaper than a netflix subscription and the have to keep you interested with content not gimicks to keep getting paid. We will stll have the gw2 option for those that want free-2-play.

Also, most MMOs offer a discount rate if you buy multiple months at a time. While they haven't said this is the case, based on most other games i would be willing to bet it will be.

On a side note, has a collectors edition of ESO been announced?

If a monthly fee lets them keep the content coming i'm fine with that. If i pay and nothing is being done on a regular basis I won't be so happy. The GW2 model is fine too but i find i spend more in a given time than I would with subscriptions. so the subscription would probably be cheaper lol.

If i pay and nothing is being done on a regular basis I won't be so happy.

This is exactly why a Pay-2-Play game is a good choice for having constant improvements to a game. If it does not improve their subscribers go away, if their subscribers go away they don't get paid. It is in their best interest to keep the game exciting, fresh, and keep you playing.

With a Free-2-Play game all the incentive on development isn't on keeping you interested in the game, it's on keeping you buying things from the cash shop. Their livelihood depends on it.

Both have their place as not everyone can justify a subscription, but in my experience a subscription based game tends to have a much more content driven format rather than gimmick driven format.

That's a very good point. My first reaction to the subscription model was "uh oh, (another) sub," but when I look back, I've spent far more in GW2 MTX (microtransactions) since launch than I have in my still-active WoW sub during the same time frame, but it doesn't seem that way because the MTX costs have varied in amount and frequency (and probably because I'm less willing to acknowledge - even to  myself -  impulse purchases for largely cosmetic content).

And then there's the irony of paying a WoW sub for not even playing the content, but simply performing the guild admin tasks needed to keep my old guild running for the sake of its remaining  members, but that's a separate issue.

I'm looking forward to ESO, but I love this family and I'd follow it to Hello Kitty Online, if that's where the next chapter was (okay, I'll admit, I'm glad it's not going there).

As I watched the new video, it brought watery eyes and memories I will never forget in my head. I sadly work almost way too much and when I do get to play it is never for very long. I look forward to Elder Scrolls Online as it will open another avenue to play however much I can with the family. Miss you guys tons and maybe one of these late nights I will be able to log into raid call and chat for a bit. :)

I have the imperial edition too, I'm going to create a Dunmer Templar, I'm on raid call. Most likely my character will be male, I'm looking for 3 people  that have voice chat, (raidcall)

are starting on the first day,  My character would marry someone then form a 4 member party. Perfer a Dragonknight, Socerer, Nightblade group so we can round out the

skill base.  By day 1 im hoping for 15+ character leveling.

From the description on the website, it looks like the major thrust of game play for Elder Scrolls on-line will be PvP. I am a lousy PvPer and frankly, a PvP-oriented game doesn't thrill me at all. I am a new member to Gaiscioch and really like the Guild/Community, but this move to ESO--despite the assurances that GW2 will still be supported--means that members like myself are most likely to be left behind. Sooner or later, the demands of trying to keep-up with two games will tell on the leadership and GW2 will follow the same fate as past games that Gaiscioch used to maintain a presence on. I understand the rationale behind moving to the new game, but am saddened by the fact that it will almost certainly mean people like myself slowly falling out of contact with the mainstream of the guild.

Aside from the PvP issue, is the move to a pay-2-play format. In the past, when I was working, I could afford to play multiple subscription games at a time, but I not currently working and the costs of moving to and maintaining a presence on a subscription-based game is difficult to justify.  That is how I ended-up on GW2 after having spent years on WOW, SWTOR, etc. Free is nice, even with the admitted limitations that come with it.

Initially, I had thought to bite-the-proverbial-financial-bullet and move to ESO, but when confronted with a play emphasis that does not appeal to me--or my strengths. Regardless of the assurances that "even a beginner" can play, advertisements are designed to get people to buy, not to disseminate information. After all--what does the gamemaker risk by lying about it? Once a person has purchased the game and played long enough to determine that the game is not for them, the game maker has already made money. They might risk having a dissatisfied player advise potential new players against purchasing the game, but that potential damage is minimal compared to the prospects of enticing far more buyers to sample their wares.

I trust that the Gaiscoch leadership had chosen this move with care and I understand that it is impossible to please every one, but I'm not sure ESO On-line is the best move--but maybe there are no others. This move does seem to be fraught with risk, though. The major reason cited for moving to ESO is the limits placed on the growth of the guild. But, if the move ends-up losing people who are not comfortable with the new game (which more or less violates the basic, "Play how you want, when you want, for as long as you want" philosophy of the guild by forcing people to either play PvP or not play), then what has been gained? It almost seems to be swapping some existing GW2 members--like myself--for some potential, as not-yet identified new members in ESO. Sometimes that is what is required to grow. I'm just sorry that I will probably not be able to make the move. I'm not saying I won't, but at the moment I'm leaning toward not migrating. I don't enjoy PvP, I'm no good at it, I don't like the added expense of the new game and I'm getting tired of starting over.

I hope that falling away from Gaiscioch won't be the result of this move to ESO, but I'm afraid that will be the probable result. It saddens me, but I don't expect the leadership to change their plans because of me. I just would like them to know that not everyone is as enthusiastic about it as they are and why.  To quote my favorite comedian: Thanks for the memories . . .

Sherburne,

Our home and future on Sanctum of Rall is solidified in stone. We're not going anywhere. Sanctum of Rall is a living monument to our dear fallen member Oldroar. I will not see his name disrespected or forgotten and as long as Sanctum of Rall stands we will be there.

That said just as you do not wish to play ESO, others do. Even if Gaiscioch didn't go there, most of our membership would anyways. You need to realize Gaiscioch was born of RvR, in DAOC and later WAR. It wasn't until RIFT that we ever did anything PvE related. We came to Guild Wars 2 looking for DAOC 2 and what we got was DAOC Lite. ESO gives those RvR players a place to call home that is very reminiscent of DAOC. When Skyrim came out our numbers dropped 36% for nearly 6 months.

In addition there is no Raiding in GW2 and most of our raiders have been without the family for some time. ESO allows them to rejoin the family for the first time in nearly a year.

We left RIFT because of what they did to our friends who developed that game. All 36 of my contacts were laid off and the game changed it's base principle away from standing on it's own to being a shadow of WoW. We loved RIFT for their desire for innovation and that dream and goal was murdered right after Storm Legion was released. Within 3 patches of Storm Legion we lost over 70% of our population. These weren't people leaving the guild, these were people who quit playing altogether. Our decision to pull out was not based on the release of Guild Wars 2, but on the result of the power of Trion changing from the Developers Vision to the Venture Capitalist (NBC Universal) desire to build a WOW clone.

I don't tell people where to play. If they want to play ESO I let them, If they want to play GW2 I let them. I have setup a core elder team for both games and will continue being in both. Only time will tell where the population flows. I will be running a couple events a week in both. Everyone in Gaiscioch can schedule and lead events at Lorgair rank.

Sherburne - ESO is not just PvP...there is a very large PvE aspect as well.  The game's goal seems to be to appease both PvE and PvP styles.  As a caveat - I have not played in any Beta weekends, this is going purely from reviews I've read/watched.  For one thing one of their main target audience is Elder Scrolls players- many of whom may have never tried an mmorpg and like PvE only.  That's what I loved about DAOC and WAR.  I could PvE when I felt like it and PvP when I felt like it.

As far as sub fee - it seems to scare a lot of people away. I've only played mmorpgs with sub fees and quit playing Star Wars when it went F2P.  If you think about it - the sub costs less than eating out once a month and even less than going to the movies nowadays.  Now if you were paying the sub fee for a whole family - then I wish they would come up with a discounted family rate.

PvP is not my cup of tea.  I like to stick with PVE, and im happy :).

I don't know much about ESO.  I did pre order it.  And I'm sure the PVE content will be great.

I haven't gone wrong with any game Gaiscioch has run with.

I would like to join the family ongoing to Elder Scrolls but I have a few questions. My computer doesn't have alot of space. I heard through the grapevine the game requires alot of memory. If I had to purchase a larger hard drive what is the lowest I could go to be able to play it?

I also found out that the game will be coming out on the console platforms at a later date (June). Even tho they will not be cross platformed, will Gaiscioch include those members who decide to purchase it on the consoles in stuff? For example allowing them to put in crafting data into the Marketplace as long as it is similiar to PC?

Just mac/pc. Often times console versions get slight modifications.

As one of the Gaiscioch commanders with a little experince under my belt,  I would like to reassure everyone that Fog's statements about Gaiscioch remaining in GW2 are those of all of us. We will be in GW2 as long as the game exists.  I have run guild events on weekdays in WvW for a long time, and anticipate continuing to do so for many many years.  Play is free in GW2 and since my little family is on a fixed income we do not plan to jump from game to game to game. We will be participating in both GW2 and ESO.

Personally, I prefer WvW and AvA and am not much for Pve.  I much prefer the interaction of a live opponent as opposed to that of a "computer generated intelligence", so Both GW2 and ESO have their plus and minus sides in that regard.

I see ESO as an opportunity for us all to experience a much wider experience in WvW.  There will be Pve content in Cyrodiil as well as AvA.  There will be the opportunity for smaller units to make a difference in the tide of battle.  Setting up ambushes along frequently travelled  routes to resources, keeps, and towers for example.

The battle ground in Cyrodiil is absolutely huge and offers cover, and concealment not available in GW2.  GW2 is a great game for WvW but the small size of the battlefield lends it more towards the Zerg vs Zerg  mode of combat operations. This appeals to many players, especially those who do not spend much time in WvW.  When you are in a large Zerg the size of your group determines the outcome of the battle in the majority of cases, not player skill, or commander skill.  Certainly a good zerg commander will outperform a poor commander, but overall the size determines the outcome.  With zerg battles, you are told what to play, and basically how to play it.  It matters little how much skill you have since that has all been determined for you. Put the hammers in front, casters in the rear and simply run over your opponents. There are those commanders out there who can slow the tide, and sometimes defeat the larger force but the Zerg mentality is not to attack unless you outnumber your opponets by a great margin.  So these skillful commanders are few and far between.

You cannot hide a large group of players in GW2 easily.  The terrain is relatively flat, so to speak, with little vegetation. ESO offers a more realistic terrain, with vegitation, small and large hills, etc, all permitting concealment and cover opportunities. Additionally, everyone will have stealth abilities in ESO enabling a group of disciplined players to attack quickly, then melt back into the terrain to strike again in a different area regardless of the group size.  Skill will once again become the deciding factor, rather than the zerg.   There will be plenty of smaller objectives for the small group and individual players.

There will certainly be the Zerg's in ESO, but I do not see them offering the same advantages.  For one, the size of the battlefield will be against them.  It will take about 30 minutes to run from one side of the battlefield to the other. In GW2 you can run across the entire zone in about 3 minutes. A lot can change on the battlefield in 30 minutes.  A determined group of players cutting transportation lines of the enemy will make rapid point to point travel impossible, negating zergs. Many smaller groups will be more effective in this case since the zerg will only be able to move so fast.  Smaller units spread across the battlefield will most likely dominate the overall score

You can see from this that there is a lot to offer in ESO.  So there will be a lot of activity there. But I still like GW2.  It is the first game that I found that broke from the WOW mold, provided decent graphics an everchanging content, thanks to a development team that provides fresh ideas on a biweekly basis, and a great family of people to provide guidance an assistance for all.

I hope to see all of you in ESO and GW2 over the coming years.

I will be playing both ESO and GW2 myself. I am just now getting involved in GW2 while I wait for ESO's release. I bought the game when it came out and only played it for a month, then took a long break from MMOs. With the family there I feel like it's important to participate and support those who plan to stay there.

I'll see you on the battlefield!

Thank you Kaytlin for a very insightful post! I have always played PvE and, to tell the truth, have always been a little scared of PvP but, your explanation of the layout of the environment and possible battle strategies, along with videos of The Gaiscioch Family capturing a keep, make me excited and looking forward to the up-coming adventure!

Thank you,

Tuz

Very nice video.  Epic in fact.

I started a member in RIFT then came back to play with the guild when GW2 launched but I didn't like GW2.  Now I am coming back for ESO.
