So I heard this game discuss in the Epic Monster Hunt today, and I became intrigued because when a game includes:

Space + massive epic space battles + PvP that is in the form of massive epic space battles + MMOs + a near complete player run universe (read that one on the forums) = OHMAHGERSH!

So I began to look into it, and started the download to give the trial a run, and I was wondering if anyone else is already playing? I'm gonna go from my own experience to find whether I want to spend money on a sub or not, but it'd be nice to have friends to have backing me up as I get into the game. The nasty stories I read about pirates around the gates is a bit spooky.

Anyone?

Haven't played that one for a couple of years now. I'm a crafter in any game I play and EvE's vast manufacturing system was something that I immersed myself in for a long, long time. The problem for me was the forced PvP - I got tired of having my stuff blown up by trolls (aka Goonswarm). I've got nothing against a worthy opponent, but griefers just don't do it for me. It's a game with a very steep learning curve at the beginning, and can be hard on solo players, so if you're looking for a friendly, large corp (=guild), I'd highly recommend Eve University ( http://www.eveuniversity.org/ ). They help new players find their feet and keep the pirates at bay. Even if you don't need a corp, their forum is an excellent source of information about all aspects of gameplay.

It's a lot of fun if you can make it through the first initial tutorial grind (do the tutorials, you won't survive long without them). I haven't played in about 6 months or so now due to time constraint but when I did I thoroughly enjoyed myself. You won't have to worry to much about pirates so long as you stay in the 'beginner' zones. Pirates become a real concern when you start getting into crafting and mining of rare materials in unexplored regions. As Tyrra said above, EvE University is a fantastic Corp and they cater to new people and help guide them through the first bit of the game. Star Frontier, Jester Syndicate, Storm Dancers Shadows and The Pirates of Somolia are also really good Corps to get into that are new player friendly. I also recommend getting familiar with the Evelopedia (http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Main_Page). Maybe once things slow down in life I'll renew my sub and play again. EvE has been my go to MMO for years before GW2 =p

Yeah Eve is pretty awesome. Played a bit of it myself, kinda hard to get into but just watch some tutorials on Youtube. The Universe they have is massive, it's over 150 Light Years from end to end. So lots of pirates out there thirsty for blood!

I recommend new players stay in the NPC corps and get going on level 1 and grow into level 4 mission runner builds. Once you can do that and make some good isk you can try and figure out what BS or BC you want to fly and build out a skill plan from there. There are tons of guides and how to on this game it is over 10 years old and the new update I have yet to try out myself. Should be interesting how this turns out for EVE.

EVE is a great game with one of the most loyal followings of any MMO. As others have mentioned it's been around for ten years and, as any MMO does, suffers from a bit of complexity creep. Thus, it can seem daunting now to new players. The devs are in the process of going back and reworking a lot of the game's basic mechanics to be more balanced and logical across the board. One of the major systems just revisited was the skill system and I think the changes they've made are sound.

I've played EVE on and off for six years now and my account is currently active. Our small corp is about to start some wormhole exploration using the newly revamped scanning system. Should be fun!

I'v been in and out of EVE since '06. It's a bit like legos. I find a lot of the fun is what you can do with the game rather then the raw game it's self. A lot of times the difference between a new player writing it off as terrible and getting hooked on it is the people they first interact with. As people have mentioned above, EVE university is a great place to start.

If you happen to need the aid of a few extra guns feel free to look me up in game as Zorhonn ;)

Sorry in advance for the necro of this topic... but in my defense I wasn't around when it started, hehe.

EVE is pretty amazing.  One thing for sure is that it's not a game for everyone.  It's definitely a pvp game.  If you're not into pvp it's still a lot of fun.  It's a single shard universe, so all players (except for China) are in the same "world" as it were.  EVE University is most definitely the premiere player corp for learning the game and their rules and regs have definitely eased up and they have become more wide-spread in what they do.  The environment they want to foster is very similar to that of the Family.  The exciting thing to me about EVE is that it is very much a player driven game.

I have stepped away from being active in the game, but I still poke in there.  You can rather easily pay for your subscription using PLEX which is an in game item that you can purchase in the game with ISK, the game currency.  The biggest reason I have stepped away is that I got a little fed-up in dealing with some high-level personalities in my player corp where I was a director.

I must say being on a combat pvp fleet is simply incredible when you get action.  And I'm not a big pvper at all.

Anyway, I have been playing eve online for well over 5 years. I carry multiple accounts and I still have no idea how to win the game :P. Seriously though Eve Online, in my humble opinion, IS the greatest MMO sandbox game on the market. Don't read into what I am sayin here folks, love GuildWars and all but Eve does have a bit more than the standard grindy feel. Anyway, I am off my soapbox. If you are still playing eve and want to touch base with me my main is Ling Lliau or my Jita jockey, Hunter Naari. I log often enough and would be more than happy to jump on comms with any yall and get down with some pew pew or indy or wormholes or what ever.

If there are any members still playing EVE that are interested in a group to do stuff with, look me up in game. My main character is Marcus Caldun and my alt (used to be my wife's character) is Ma'rin Caldun. Just send Ma'rin and in-game email with your information and we'll hook up.

The core of our group has played EVE for over eight years, although that includes some long periods of inactivity. I've personally played for just shy of six years. We run a small corporation called Shadow Agents, located in Caldari space and we run weekly level 4 security missions as well as the occasional low-sec and null-sec exploration expeditions. We are also expanding to incursions as well as some wormhole ops, so there is usually something interesting going on at least twice a week. We also have a fairly strong industrial effort going, including a fully equipped POS (player owned star base) in high-sec.

It doesn't matter if you're a raw newbie with zero ISK, all GSCH will be welcome. We have a pretty good program in place to help new players get going as well as giving more experienced players plenty of challenges.

(EDIT: For those who have thought about EVE but haven't yet given it a try, I highly recommend it. One can even try it for free. Though, I must be perfectly honest up front and state one major warning. It is a compulsory PvP game. There are no 100% safe zones and "gank squads" frequently camp various high traffic areas. So if getting jumped and losing your ship/goods is going to ruin your day and cause you personal grief, then EVE is likely not the game for you. That said, we have a lot of experienced players who can teach you how to be smart and minimize your risk.)

Hey Signal,

I'll look you up later tonight. I recently re-subbed in light of the new hyperion build and rolled a new character -> Soren Takeshi (my other toon I stupidly logged out in null sec and haven't had the motivation to see if she's alive). It's been a while since I've played and having some friends around sure would be nice ^^

Perfect. Just send Ma'rin Caldun an in game email. I've been playing her more than my main lately since she does much of the industrial stuff, including upkeep of the POS. Not to mention my main, Marcus, is deep in null-sec at the moment. I really need to get him home soon.

Also, our public chat channel is "Lair 101". Join in and you can see who is online and what activity we're currently undertaking in the MOTD. If there is a fleet activity underway just PM the fleet commander for an invite. We operate out of the Oichiya system in The Citadel region of Caldari space.

I'm in and out of Eve from year to year.  I did Eve Uni years ago, then lived in Molden Heath low-sec systems, did a lot of daily wormhole ops for a while, and moved out to null-sec in one of the big alliances.

About a year and a half ago some GSCH members went to Eve and made their own corp.  They got infiltrated within a few days, ganked and robbed, probably by priates who found them through this forum.  Be careful about playing in Eve with the Gaiscioch style.

Ouch, sorry to hear some GSCH had such a hard time. The EVE player base is a cutthroat crowd, no doubt about it. I have mixed feelings about it, thus the on-again then off-again relationship I've had with the game over the years. And while I do highly recommend it to anyone who loves the sci-fi genre, I always make sure to give the whole "compulsory PVP" speech to everyone before they dive in so they know what to expect. It really boils down to CCP's stance on PvP. Rampant ganking, even in the "safe zones" is perfectly acceptable to the developers as is corporate espionage and theft. This has led to a lot of the nicer folk leaving after being victimized one too many times. The remaining player base is well... what's left after the majority of the mature player base evaporated.

What keeps me coming back is the game's great depth, complexity, player driven economy, and the ever expanding list of things to do. The fact that there is serious financial loss to death (or just losing one's ship), makes exploring the depths of null-sec or wormhole space an edge-of-your-seat type of experience that cannot be found in most MMOs.

As far as avoiding the gankers and the corporate spies/infiltrators, there are methods to limit your exposure. I'm not worried about anyone seeing our information here and infiltrating the Shadow Agents. I agree you can't play the 100% GSCH way but that's just the nature of the environment in EVE. You have to control your risks and, as much as I hate to say it, treat everyone with a certain level of suspicion. But even with that, there are ways to spread the GSCH method in New Eden. Look how well the Brave Collective Alliance has done, or especially the Curatores Veritatis Alliance - one of the oldest and friendliest alliances in EVE.

OMG! Love the bomb run. Almost enough to bring me back. Sadly, my current primary character is hunted (vendetta) and doing anything beyond 20-30 days after I log back in gets... interesting. So, if I returned to EvE I would have to start all over. Then I would most likely have to dodge wife aggro most of the times I logged in.  :(  Seems she thinks the EvE is to much stress and possibly an obsession, and those are bad things. Not sure why she would believe that (all sarcasm intended!)

uh... nope, I rolled a new toon and am just cruising high sec atm. I was part of Goonswarm and Somali Pirates back in the day but that toon is logged out in null sec somewhere and tbh I'm scared to log into her as it was my pirate and I'm sure her bounty is astronomical lol. Pretty sure most would already be in a corp but if there's enough of us that want to fly under the same banner I'm sure we could set something up.

One thing I will recommend though if you are new to EvE is to join up with EvE University for at least a couple weeks as they will walk you through everything and are really noob friendly. Also ask lots of questions in the help chat :)

that video is awesome and makes me want to go back to EvE.  I didn't play too incredibly long but I was in E-UNI my entire time.  I highly recommend it if you are starting out and tbh they had quite a bit going on for people who may have higher SP but have been out for a while and need to relearn or learn some things.  I logged out in the nullsec campus so hopefully they won't shoot me if I raise my hands and back away slowly ...

One thing that I loved about this game is that everything has consequences.  Don't fly what you can't afford to lose - because you will :)  Seriously though I've been thinking about getting back into EvE with the lack of anything I'm interested in at the moment that's playable.  There is just so much to the game and you the choices on what to do are huge.

Fly safe o7

Sorry I haven't checked in for a while, real life has been hectic. My corp's activity level in EVE is still pretty much dead. Last year the CEO handed that role off to me and disappeared. We had a handful of members who claimed they were going to return last fall, yet here we are the following spring and none have logged in yet. So our plans to run groups in low and null-sec never panned out due to lack of personnel.

My two accounts are due to expire in the next month or two (I usually keep them rolling on a three month renewal plan), and I'm not sure if I'm going to renew again or not. Even with all the updates coming I don't think EVE can compete for my time with some of the epic new sci-fi games coming, such as Elite Dangerous and especially Star Citizen. After seven years, I think my time in EVE is up.

I've just been getting back to Eve after another hiatus.  This time I'm flying for Karmafleet so that makes me an Evil Goon.   Sovwar is more fun than the last time I tried it ... or maybe its just that Goons are way better organized.

Give me a shout if you see me online:   Eadwulf Ronuken.
