Class Question and Suggestion

Hi all,

I am relatively new to Gaiscioch and to Guild Wars 2 as well. I have tried Guild Wars 2 in the past but I could never find the class for me. I am returning because it is the game for me (due to its emphasis on exploration) especially if I can find a class I enjoy.

I have always liked melee/caster (ranged) hybrids or classes that are more involved to play. Most people immediately suggest the Ranger for this reason except I do not care for pet based classes. now if the ranger can be effective without using the pet, that sounds wonderful.

After hours on research and looking into it, I do think the Engineer, Elementalist and Warrior fit my playstyle. I figured the Elementalist would lean more towards ranged and the Warrior more towards melee with the Engineer a perfect blend of the two.

I know many of you have high level characters and a lot of experience with the game so I just thought I would ask for some general input and suggestion. I have some `10 level characters on another server so I will be starting anew on Sanctum of Rall.

I appreciate any thoughts, suggestions, warnings, concerns you might have. Class choice is very important to me and my longevity in games is tied to my happiness with my class choice. My longest-played games (DAOC and WOW) were the games where I was happiest with my choice (Thane, Skald, Shaman). I find classes in GW2 very different as a whole so it has been quite the challenge for me.

Thanks so much!

engie with dual pistols is fun! Thief can be played with pistol or shortbow as well with a pair of dagger equipped in off slot for ranged and melee options as well.

my personal favorite ranged are ranger for pve (but you don't like pets) and ele. necro uses pets - but they are harder to control than ranger pets - so think you wouldn't like that class ('though i am sure some run em great w/o pets). reconsider guardian for melee.

try em all :)

Engineer can be a little slow and frustrating at early level but can be fun once you start getting more levels and toys. Elementalists with dagger builds are pretty devastating if you like a mix of magic in melee. Ranger can also be decent at both ranged and melee but they are a bit under powered at the moment.  Thief has been my main and the ranged damage is not so great. Shortbow for thief really shines up close. Guardian is strong all around and was the easiest for me to level so far. You can do pretty decent damage with a scepter in PvE at full 1200 range then switch to greatsword or hammer for close in DPS.

Really, all of the classes can do both melee and ranged although some are better at one of the other.

A Dagger/Dagger Elementalist is actually a meleeish range caster.Eles don't get to carry two weapons so you are forced to choose either ranged aoe of staff, ranged condition damage of scepter or psuedo-melee of dagger but between fights you can switch easily enough depending on your expectations of the next encounter.

They are also a highly involved class with the need to be constantly switching attunements to be their most effective.

Sounds to me like you want an elementalist.

Thanks all for the replies.

The dagger elementalist is sounding really great, I will have to look into that.

The Engineer also sounds great and I have heard it takes up to around level 10--12 (maybe?) before you get all of your tricks of the trade.

I appreciate all of the comments....its is very helpful!

I would suggest an elementalist. dagger dagger is meleeish, scepter dagger/focus is mid range, and staff is long range. although you won't be swapping in combat, you can play these styles without much of a build change.

I really enjoy my elementalist and find the toon ever challenging as I learn more of the intricacies that the class needs to be played at a high level. Elementalist has my vote.

And to be honest, I don't think any class really get all their stuff until about 30-40. Some elites impact greatly, but otherwise traits are sometime big impact of play style as well

I love my (charr) engie.  It was the first toon I rolled and max leveled.  I still love it a year later.   I've fully explored the world with her.  I like rifle & grenades for ranged and my flamethrower when I want to be mid-ranged.  The jump shot #5 on the rifle is super helpful with jumping puzzles.   Nades for underwater fighting are fun too.  I still don't think I've mastered everything that my engie can do.  For me, I find I am constantly moving my toon for the best position and swapping my tool kits.
(I probably look like a spaz on the field, but I have a lot of fun.)  :D    If I remember, I really started getting a handle on her when I leveled up from 30 to 40.   Have fun & I hope you find a class that you love.

Don`t forget  mesmer   ,  sword/pistol/focus  and staff  ,  little slow till 30 but if you have exp level to 20 scroll that should help or do some crating exploration  for fast lvls ,  one you hit 30 its easy srteet all way to 80 .

Very strong endgame class for both pve and wvw , and is a mix of melee, caster  at  all ranges  very fun to play as well as has a lot of get out of oooo sh  ablities hehe  .

Just to be honest... Give the Engie to level 20 before you decide.  I love my engie and run her with elixir gun/flame thrower and then what ever else in the 3rd slot that I find amusing - grenades, bombs, rocket boots.... with supply crate as the final slot.   A lot will depend on how you trait her - and well - any of them.

I run ele with scepter dagger which is a great mix of range/melee.

If you like to constantly be doing something I can swear that the above two classes will keep you constantly shuffling since as others have stated - switching kits on the engie and attunements on the ele is a must to be effective.

I also have a lvl 80 necro but play her less since she isn't high maintenance and I get bored with her (it sounds like you are like me) but she is high survivability  and high damage and can take multiple mobs just standing within her marks and wells - without using any pets.

I also have a lvl 70 thief - but don't play her too "typical".  Once I got her high enough to trait in "bouncing bullets" on pistols - I am constantly using dual pistols - a lot of dodging to place caltrips down - a lot of stealing - and  poisons - so although she doesn't swap weapons much - she is constantly moving and quite enjoyable to play.   I am not a stealthy thief.

That's all I have - and you do have a lot of good feedback from a wide variety of people - good luck!

Safe journ.
