The Ele was my first profession and is also my main, but i haven't played him very often the last three or more month. I only use him when doing guild missions, or when running a zerg in WvW. I'm a altoholic, i try to level one of each profession and take every path available to see all the content. This takes quite a lot of time :)

With the new content out, i wanted to take my Ele to southsun cove to get the achievements and so far i hate it. With all the nerfs to RTL, my ability to avoid mobs, or running away before dying  are a lot harder now. I think i died 4 times in an hour playtime, even though i run the bunker build. The reef drakes with their annyoing confusion, the karka with their large health pool. I don't do enough damage, i don't have enough condition removal and i still feel squishy especialy after leveling a warrior to 80 in the last couple of weeks. Either Warrior is OP or Ele got nerfed to death.

Now i'm looking for another way to play my ele, my problem is i don't find any useful traits in fire or air, water and arcane are to powerful to give up the 30 points. I saw they buffed signets, but traiting into them looses me some of my few condition removals. There is the build with the Lightning Hammer, i don't know about that yet, it doesn't feel like playing an ele anymore.

If you have suggestions please let me know, i'm in dispair.

Here's a follow up to my post: I was so frustrated dying a couple of times that i had to blow of steam somewhere. I choose this forum, wasn't the smartest move in hindsight :) While playing a Warrior i got so used to standing still, only dodging when i new a big hit was incoming and beating on the mobs til they were dead, that i played my Elementalist almost the same way. After i started to kite, dodge as often as possible (incoming attacks) and most important switching to the situation dependent attunement, it got a whole lot easier. Now i only die when i pull more then 2 Mobs, Veteran Karka are still pretty tough to solo though, but that's okay. I run when i have to.

Can you use GW2 Build Craft and post your build here? I don't play ele, but I would be more than willing to help you out. I've found ele's hard to deal with in WvW, so I did a little bit of research on them about a month or two ago. Anyone else that plays ele as well might find it helpful to know where you're coming from as well. If I understand you correctly, you're running D/D ele with something similar to the common 0/10/0/30/30 build? Normally, isn't that a tanky build? Edit: Bad link sorry....

Like Ignis said, maybe someone could be of more help if you'd post your current build, possibly along with your weapon type and armor stats. I run something similar to a bunker build ele as my main. Veteran Karka are tough to solo, but I can take on several undead at once in cursed shore if I'm using my daggers. This is my build. It's kind of unusual but it works for my play style. And I'll switch between staff and daggers depending on what I'm doing. http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/elementalist/?1.5|8.1p.h1h.8.1p.h8|0.0.0.0.0.0|1c.77.1c.77.1c.77.1c.77.1c.77.1c.77|4u.d1g.1n.64.3u.d1e.31l.d1e.1n.64.3u.d1e|0.k16.f3.f3.k45|0.0|1m.23.1t.1r.29|e

... and really - Southsun is tough solo - really it is... My Engy can solo almost anything even Vets there but those darn drakes do me in a lot with their confusion and my Engy is Toughness/Healing/Flame Thrower build meant to stand in the middle of hordes of WvWvW players - and survive. I stay away from the Drakes - don't like them in the least- they are nasty creatures and the only time I tackle them is with a group. I can take them with my necro but I can tune her to send the conditions back to the enemy and to remove conditions... I haven't tried my ele there yet but I thought about taking her in just to get better at playing her as I do like her. In general though, I stay away from the drakes :) Also, where there are builds and classes suited for winning by kiting (which is what my ele has to do also) ... kiting in Southsun is so tough because of the mobs - everywhere. The chance of getting adds is really great. But I am glad you are having more luck now... and don't worry about dying so much... I see a lot of dead people there.

Hi, thanks for the responses. Ok, this is my staff build. I use it for guild events, WvWvW zergs and WvWvW defense. I still don't have all the gear i want, still missing my Soldier Leggins, and two Superior Healing Runes. Have to run some dungeons for it, haven't had any luck with PUGs so far. http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/elementalist/?1.0|6.1g.h1|0.0.0.0.0.0|1c.71h.1c.b1h.1c.713.1c.b1h.1g.71j.1c.71h|4u.d1g.2u.e13.3u.e15.1g.67.311.e17.1c.68|0.a6.0.u59b.u58b|0.1|1m.1u.1t.1s.29|e The next one is my d/d build. I use it when i solo, or when i'm in a small group in WvWvW. http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/elementalist/?1.0|8.1g.h1.8.1g.h1b|0.0.0.0.0.0|1c.71h.1c.b1h.1c.713.1c.b1h.1g.71j.1c.71h|4u.d1g.2u.e13.3u.e15.1g.67.311.e17.1c.68|0.a1.0.u39b.u56b|0.1|1m.1u.1t.1s.29|e It's pretty much the same build, i just change one trait per line. Suggestions to improve this build are welcome. It took me quite some time to get used to my Ele again, but now it's a whole lot easier. I don't say i run out to solo Karka Veterans or these annoying Veteran Drakes though. I try to avoid them, but if i have to i'm able to solo them most of them time, as long as i don't pull in other mobs, or miss the timing switching attunements. Happens some times :) Yesterday i joined a PUG running around in Southsun Cove. This was really fun, we did a lot of events, killed everything we could find. Even though i didn't have to much luck we drops, this was a experience worth repeating :)

If you missed it... Prissy is running a Southsun event Monday Night. I plan on joining her for that unless R/L gets in the way. Her events are always fun. My Engy has the area so I'll probably bring my necro or ele since neither of them have been there yet.

Even my Paladin Beastmaster has problems in Southsun. :\ Everything there hits like a truck, shoots you from halfway across the zone, will chase you clear across the zone and has too large of a health pool. Always try to engage singles, and if you get more than two... run. There is no real easy strategy for those stupid drakes and their confusion stacks, other than switching off all auto-attacks and not mashing your skill keys. Just switching off autoattack will help keep you standing, because they really don't hit too hard, so you can take your time unless you get zerged by drakes. edit: (Paladin Beastmaster is what I call my BM bunker build on my ranger, Tabitha)

I don't really see any problems with your build. Seems plenty tanky for an ele. I think eles take some time to get used to playing, and that may have been your problem. Like everyone else here has said, southsun is not a good zone to run solo in for almost anyone.

I'm already doing a lot better in Southsun Cove, as i mentioned i leveled a Warrior to level 80, my playstyle changed accordingly, i got lazy. I still kited and dodged if necessary, but most of the time i just storm in, using my GS 3 and 2, most of the time nothing is standing anymore, except it is a veteran or a champion. I was able to solo most of the champions up to level 50 zones. I got overconfident and when i played my Ele again, i didn't change my playstyle. It took me quite some time, before i realized, what i was doing. I forgot to change my attunements every couple of seconds to get my boons, use my auras for more boons, using my cantrips to get even more boons. Using dodgeroll in waterattunement to get a free regeneration and therefore a free condition removal. This list goes on, i forgot what playing an Ele is about. After i got used to my rotation again, it was a lot easier soloing, i now know what i can handle and when i have to run. I didn't die often since then, what makes the whole Southsun Cove experience a lot more enjoyable :) I want to thank you all for your suggestions, they were helpful, but most important it's just a game. Right now i don't really understand, why i got so annoyed in the first place. :) @Sekkerhund Could you link your BM build, please. I have a ranger, which i started half a year ago. In the end i just used her for crafting. She's level 38 right now. My main problem is the pet. I don't know how to trait to use the pet effectivley enough without diminishing the damage of my weapons. For some reason i have a harder time to find the right synergies for her, than on my Ele or Warrior. Thanks

Its not 100% complete, its in the polish, fit and finish stage. Once I have it 100% and tested, I'll post it. Hopefully Anet won't nerf the key components of her build by then, like they did with my Mesmer's custom build. All I had left was obtaining 6 Nightmare Runes and her crit/confusion build was 100%. :\

I would be interested in the build also including what pet you use. I really need to start leveling my Ranger ... this is one of the first games with a class like that where I'm just not that fond of them but still love the concept. But when compared to my 3 - 80's (Engy, Ele, Necro) I have the least fun with Ranger.... awww - but this is another story ... Markus, I understand the time difference issue - but at least your back on track with your Ele... The main reason I like my Engy and Ele so much is the fact that they keep you mentally challenged since you have to change in and out of toolkits/attunements so much to be effective. I hate relying on two or three skills when playing a character - I want to be all hyper active. I don't really have ADD except when it comes to playing games and then it is a real issue for me.

Sure, I just want to make sure I can give my best possible build when I post it. These are custom builds that take me several months to work out specifically to my play style, so that's mostly why I don't release them. Plus, they never seem to quite be complete, heh. I have Tabitha close, but I need to get my Guardian, Baelvara, to 80 this week and geared out, so I can compare some bunker mechanics. I also only design and test my builds for WvW and PVE. I do not make sPVP builds, because my builds are too hybrid and the available sPVP gear does not support these types of builds. Which makes me sad, because feel like I'm playing a pre-made build for sPVP, rather than a custom build that best suits me. So now that I've properly hijacked this thread, I'll consider it a job well done and I'll post more about my builds in their own thread over the coming weeks.

I totally understand.... it took me a long time to flesh out my Engy build before I was happy with it. And it was only after playing and surviving pretty well in WvWvW that I shared it. Still not absolutely happy with my Necro or Ele and if I'm not totally happy - why would I share them. So take your time - be happy - then share when you think it's right.

Sounds like you already got it figured out. I had the same problem. I was running my Warrior for a long time then switched back to Ele and couldn't figure out why I was dying so fast and often. =) Once I figured it out it was like the light came on. I'm running my Ele more than any other toon now because it feels like it's got the best overall balance for PvE and WvW. What I'm finding is that damage mitigation is key. You can't take many direct hits so you have to mitgate. In WvW many times people will come after me and give up when they can't get my health down, and I retaliate with pretty high DPS. I prefer Sceptor and Dagger for solo PvE and most WvW. Staff is great with groups but otherwise leaves you pretty vulnerable.

I haven't really tried sceptor dagger yet, i had problems with dragon tooth to hit, it just takes to long in WvW. How do you play with it, when do you use sceptor 2? (or is it 3, can't remember :) )

I primarily just use Dragons Tooth for sieges. Does good damage on walls and siege weapons. I start with burning, then blinding, rotate through Frost Aura, Rock Barrier, and Stone Armor, then I look for players with low health and hit with lightning (have damage boost on players at/below 33%), then finish with Ride the Lightning. Use Updraft and Mist Form to quickly and safely get away from large crowds. Also when you drop Phoenix your Endurance regens fast so you can add successive dodges to the mix.

I have found (just my opinion) that I need to stick with one weapon set on my Ele (and other characters) to do my best. I play with dual pistols on my Engy and if I try to switch up to rifle for a different situation then it just messes me up since it messes with my mind. I am of the mindset that you should play however you have the most fun... every style has a benefit. I tried playing with the staff while in groups and found myself being far less effective since 80% of the time I run scepter/focus on my ele. I have the most fun with it and feel I am quite effective. Change me into staff - and I lose effectiveness and therefore whatever perceived shortcomings are attributed to my scepter/focus abilities are really negated by me being a more effective player. I hope that made sense. Mot to mention that if you generally play one way - then you are traited for that... so changing to a different weapon could mean you have to redo your traits - and switching back and forth - then back again does nothing but cause issues - especially when you forget. (Not that that has ever happened to me - ok, it has) But... that is just my opinion... All you do is find a different function during different events to make yourself useful. So if your a D/D ele, or whatever, and don't have great range - then learn to carry arrow carts for defense of towers and keeps or jump on one already in place... while sieging you can do the same thing or patrol for those sneaking in and take them out. You will always have a use - you will always be a benefit to the group if you are having fun and enjoying what you do.
