Crafted Gear, is it the best choice?

As I'm still relatively new to ESO and haven't been able to level up my crafting skills much (I'm an exploration junky so I'm rarely in a city!) I'm wondering if I've been doing myself a disservice by NOT using crafted armor and weapons. My Nightblade is 30 now and I've never used any player-made items, am I doing it wrong? :) Of course I want to support my local, guild crafters, but am I also missing out on benefits I could be using to enhance my exploration and general Nightblading experience?

I DO have 3 pieces each of two Medium armor sets, Shadow and Mountain, so I'm getting some decent bonuses, but with all the talk of crafting I see in both guild and zone chat every night, it's nagging at me- what do you all think?

Crafted armor sets just got better with 1.12 as many of the sets that featured only a 3 set bonus, got a nice 5 set bonus. The other thing about crafting is that the stats are always one level better than the equivalent world drop. That is to say that a level 30 crafted chest piece has the same armor as a level 31 world drop piece.

On the other hand, there are set bonuses for world drop that are just too good not to go for. Warlock stands out as the premiere one, but there are others.

I don't think you are cheating yourself while leveling up if you're not crafting gear. You should be more than powerful enough to take on most content. You might consider really putting time into gear once you reach the Veteran ranks.

Crafting is probably some of the best gear endgame, when done right, excepting certain rare case sets which in general have jewelry as part of the set... and thus work very well in synergy with crafted sets.

However, for crafting to really shine you need SETS.  This means crafting at the appropriate world crafting station, and knowing enough traits to make the set piece.  This is why research is important for crafters.

If you want to focus on one or two crafts, research those strongly, and the other only if you feel like it.

You can, with some of the dropped sets, have a 3 set crafted, a 5 set crafted, and a 3 set drop... which is ideal for 2h users and staff wielders.

You can, with 2 weapons or sword and shield, have 3 of the 3 set crafted on at any time.  Alternatively, you can have a 3 set drop, a 3 set crafted, a 5 set crafted, and a spare piece -or- a 3 set drop, a second 3 set drop, and 2 of the 3 set crafted.

So crafting is generally the way to maximize those benefits, and drop set jewelry is extremely important... as it allows you to maximize set bonuses.

That said, until you are VR12 making anything above rare (blue) gear is pretty much a waste... high VR people may make epic (purple) if so inclined.  VR12 gear will ideally be Legendary/Artifact quality (gold.)

I definitely plan to put a lot more thought into my gear once I reach Veteran levels. For now (at 31) I've got 3 pieces of the Shrouded set and 3 pieces of the Coat of the Red Mountain set.
