I'm looking for a young adult (14 yrs old level) horror book for my daughter's friend.  I think that I'm going to suggest "the graveyard book" by neil gaiman.  But if somebody knows of a book that's a bit scarier than that that's still written well, please let me know so that I have other suggestions for in the future.  I'm pretty much trying to help my daughter get her friend interested in reading, and we figured that since she LOVES horror movies... horror book might be what she likes - Far as I know she's mostly only read what her teachers assigned so she hasn't been exposed to a large variety of genres.

The House with a Clock in its Walls - John Bellaris (part of a series if I'm not mistaken)

Pet Cemetary/The Dark Half - Stephen King

The Monstrumologit - Rick Yancey (Gothic Horror)

Darkwater - Catherine Fisher (Kinda like Beauty and the Beast meets Faust/Haunting of Hill House -> dark without getting gritty or brutal)

Arabat - Clive Barker (If she's into horror flicks she should be familiar with this name)

Those are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head :)

PS: Gaiman Rules! Graveyard Book, Coraline or Good Omens would also be fantastic suggestions

If you meet yourself on the testing track, don't make eye contact. Lab boys tell me that'll wipe out time. Entirely.

thank you for the suggestions.  I don't think pet cementary or most stephen king books would be quite appropriate for a 14 year old girl that's a bit behind others of her age where it comes to reading skills.  I'll read through the RE books and go through the others that were listed to see if any of the others work well, a few seem to be fine off the bat, some I don't know of.

Thank you again :)

To be perfectly blunt you may be better off staying away from Horror all together, if you do insist on horror I would recommend cruising used book stores for novelizations of movies she may have watched and enjoyed.  But personal opinion is you might want to try humor rather than horror.  Authors like Douglas Adams or Robert Asprin.

Just saw this post - I you are still looking for ideas, I believe Lois Duncan's Books are for teenagers.  The most famous is "I Know What You Did Last Summer" which was made into a movie, but there are a lot of them.  They are very good easy reading thrillers.  I think the reading level is what you are looking for.  I read them at a younger age but I also read adult books like Atlas Shrugged when I was in middle school so reading level is a little skewed to me.

Just found this thread; Dean Koontz is a great writer. Watchers is one of his best and probably would be good for that age. Any of his earlier books would fit that age group, but later books got more graphic and adult like.
